I have owned both the old iview media, the newer expression media and now th media pro. As far as i can tell from my own experience, the old iview quite systematically destroyed long file names, the newer expression did not (has not happened to any files after upgrading to expression). So perhaps you should take the chance on this one. orf

Julien, are you on Mac or Windows?

I haven't seen iView/EM actually "destroy" long file names, but have seen some odd behavior when importing files (you see the truncated names in the Activity window). Is it actually an issue with long path names? I've seen it in Adobe Acrobat and InDesign as well.

I remember some issues with Quicktime 7.4, maybe this is related?

    Julien,

There were longstanding issues with file names over 31 characters on Mac. See:

File name length issues on Mac (5 year-old bug)

That bug seems to have been squashed (FINALLY 😄 ). There is still a noticeable shortening of long file names in the import progress dialog (only cosmetic?), but I have seen NO indication so far that Media Pro doesn't play nice with long file names, on the Mac at least.

i have found that long file names created in C1P and then a contact sheet made in CS3 will truncate the long filenames. But the same files using Bridge CS5 to make a contact sheet is fine. This is one the same computer.

    Thanks for the replies,

Wel the thing is, before we used any DAM system, ( young and don't know a lot), we used a file naming system.
That system went from the folder, over the Raws to the Retouching files to the JPEGS, all the same name.. so we could find any thing fast... It is the same name that went to clients, and that they have also now on their systems..
They send me that exact name when they have remakrs/ want images again...

But because there is a lot of info in the name ( type, client, shootname, date, number etc..)

I am under the impression that Media Pro can handle them.. it hink

Just have the latest version (bought and installed today 28th August 2011) - we have been iView media / Microsoft Media and now Phase One media users for years, and some of the bugs have followed us from the earliest days.....

And two VERY long standing bugs remain:

    Version 1.0.1.50536
LONG filenames still are truncated when exporting to a HTML gallery - example - catalog a file called 'changed-to-file-wth-very-long-name-today.mov' and export as HTML gallery
Result: HTML file is called 'changed-to-file-wth-very-.html"
    IMAGE is called'changed-to-file-wth-_471d71.mov'
Even though in the Media Pro catalog the FULL filename is shown. This bug has been with us forever, and has forever caused us problems.

DATE preference on MAC OSX - we STILL cannot change this preference - it remains 'greyed out' so if we use the date function though HTMl templates we are restricted to xx/xx/xxxx 'short' date only - so files we create and upload as web page with the date in this style on the 1st December 2011 are named 01/12/2011, and of course then interpreted by Google and others as being created on the 12th of January (12/01/2011 UK format).

About date format. Using Media Pro version 1.0.1.50536 for only a week and Mac OS 10.6.8. No problem getting Media Pro to adopt my Mac OS date setting but it is the short date setting. It works on all my old catalogs last "managed" with MS Expression Media v1. I just changed my short date format* with system preferences to test this matter. I quit Media Pro and re-opened any catalog. The change was applied to all date fields. I use yyyy.mm.dd for both short and medium length dates. So far Phase One Media Pro solves numerous problems we had with Expression Media and runs faster
    .
Now if all of this does not apply to HTML output, then there is a bug to fix or an instruction to issue. Also, if you want date formatting independent of system preferences, then ...

    * pour ce faire, en français puisque mon ordi. est ainsi programmé :
préférences système - langue et texte - formats - date - personnaliser - on conjugue avec l'interface pour manipuler l'abrégé.

I have just downloaded the new version 1.1 (November 2011)

I love(!) how the 'cannot set the date format on mac OSX' preferences bug has been squashed.

The option to set the date format has been removed completely.

In 'preferences/general' it has now disappeared.

    Completely. Gone.

How would we now get Media Pro to output dates as long format? 'November 1st 2011' style?

Anyone out there know if the preference remains in the 1.1 Windows version?

I have been suffering from accessing, managing and even renaming files that have more than 255 characters over a long time. I have tried various ways but failed. Then I have searched this problem in internet. Then I have found a solution. This software is very easy to use. Named Long path Tool. To use the program all you need to do is to download this program online and save all the settings to your computer. This program is compatible with Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7. you can find it from longpathtool(dot)com
