Why All The Capture One Folders??
Just finished my trial version and I'm ready to purchase. I've noticed many Capture One folders in several places throughout my hard drive. Are they necessary? Why so many? Can this function be turned off?

When you open a folder with images from within CO5, the program will create a CaptureOne folder inside that image folder. In the CaptureOne folder you'll find a Settings50 folder and a Cache/Proxies folder. Your image adjustments are saved in the Settings50 folder and you might want to back that up with your images. The Cache/Proxies folder contains the previews. When you delete this folder or the preview files, CO5 will create new proxies the next time you open the folder.
Note that when you delete (or move to a different folder) an image in CO5, the accompanying settings and proxies files are deleted (or moved) as well.
So, the answer to your question is yes, CO5 needs these folder in each image folder. When you have your images well organized on your disk you will only find the CaptureOne folders at these locations.0 -
A raw processor can do one of four things to keep track of the adjustments you want for a raw file:
1) write the change in the raw file itself (some metadata-oriented programs do this)
2) keep a central archive/catalog of the adjustments (aperture/lightroom)
3) place a sidecar next to the file or in a subfolder where the file is (capture one, ACR, Bridge)
Each has advantages and disadvantages.
Capture One is built on the third option. The advantage is it is very easy to share files across multiple users/computers since moving a folder of raw files from one computer to another by definition includes the subfolder "capture one" which contains all the desired adjustments to those raws. The disadvantage is all those damn folders everywhere.
On balance I prefer #3 but none of them are perfect and there is room for personal choice/taste in the matter.
