From the posts in the forum it sometimes it looks the newer the Mac, the more tethering problems. IIRC an issue with lack of sufficient power on the USB port might be (part of) the problem.

First take is to see whether you see the camera in System Profiler tool. Next, if you have Canon EOS Utility installed, see whether this tool can connect.

Also check whether your camera firmware is up to date.

Have you recently replaced your tether cable? We had a similar problem and figured out that the older cables were no longer supported.

Same here on the new MBP.
Works fine with DPP (no crashes at all) but C1 crashes even before the camera is recognized.
On the Mac Pro it works.

Frank, maybe you like to share more details with us. "Yes, me too" replies in general don't generate much help. Similar cases are often not that similar when you go a level deeper.

But of course paul no problem.

I've been using capture one for a while and on my previous mpb's it worked with both the leaf aptusII7 and the canon.
Since I switched to the new MBP with thunderbolt it doesn't.
When I connect the canon it seems the whole program is put on hold, not a black screen but just nothing (no detection).
When I connect the canon the canon eos utility will start up as it should.
I first tried to disallow this because I thought that maybe it interfered (on my Mac pro I also don't use eosutility) but the same thing happened.
Than I thought maybe something else was wrong with my camera or cables (it happened on location). So I decided to try DPP and much to my surprise this worked flawless. No hangs no problems etc.

Now that we're on the subject I also experience once in a while (let's say once - twice every session) an enormous pause. Meaning in capture one the spinning wheel will stop spinning, only solution is to lay the camera down and wait for 3-4 minutes and all images wil come in, this is by the way on the macpro, but also happened on my previous mbp.

So there must be something wrong with the way the canon is supported.
Have reported this as a bug so I hope phase will solve this.

At first I was afraid it was a problem with the sandy bridge drivers but than also the eos utility should have given problems I guess.

Frank, some thoughts and tips to check
    - on your Mac (MBP with thunderbolt), try any USB port available
    - check camera firmware, update to latest
    - check EOS Utility, Image Capture, Lightroom, Aperture or other capturing program is not running when CO Pro starts or runs
    - check in System Profile, USB whether the camera is still detected (Cmd+R refreshes the display; you can do this when before connecting/starting CO Pro and while the issue occurs)
    - check version of CO Pro (I suggest to use 6.2)

Tried every USB port (first thing I did)
    Camera firmware is latest
EOS utility works fine, but also when it's bypassed no succes.
    No other programs are running.
    Camera is detected just fine.

Problem appeared when I switched to the new MBP, before that everything worked fine.
    Newest version C1 is running.

But do you own the new MBP ?
I strongly suspect some driver issues from or Capture One or Apple.
The connection however with other capture software is working (DPP).

    Frank,

As a temporary measure have you tried creating a session before tethering, attaching the camera, and then selecting that sessions capture folder when EOS utility launches? Then you can launch C1 select the same session folder and work in a pseudo tethered fashion.

This may provide a workaround while you open a support case and or more info is gathered from users experiencing the same issue

No, I don't have the new MBP.
By the way, never regarded DPP as capture software (as I though EOS Utility is doing the job). Not that important though.

I can endorse Jeff12's approach, although I think it is simpler.

In CO6 you can switch off tethering from Preferences, Capture tab, Providers. You create a session and do tethering from EOS Utility which will run at the same time as CO6. Let EOS Utility store the captured images in your session's capture folder of CO6. Mark this folder as the hot folder in CO6.
And you can enjoy live view in EOS Utility as well.

Very good tip and it will probably work, did not test it that way, I found out just before a workshop and decided to go for DPP to make sure it worked. When you disconnect the tether option I see no reason why it shouldn't work indeed 😉
It should be fixed however I think because a lot of people (including me) will not think about this at first hand. But very good tip.
Will try that next time I use the MBP for capturing.
Now let's hope it's not a too big problem and would love to hear why it didn't work, always love the technical reasons.

One more tip Frank to prevent DPP to intervene between the EOS Utility - Capture One tango: In EOS Utility, set Preferences, Linked Software to: None.

I never install DPP in my opinion it is a POS and EOS Utility works with Bridge and lightroom in the same fashion so you always have multiple options if one solution is acting up.

Frank, I yesterday installed a new MBP (Thunderbolt) for a client with a Canon 1Ds III. Had no problem tethering both to EOS Utility or CO Pro 6.2.1.
