Pentax K10D and Adobe DNG Support - Where is it ? ? ?
Hi,
I'm new to this forum and I joined purely out of frustration. I have been a Pentax user for many years and I've invested in a Pentax K10D DSLR. SInce my purchase of a *istD DSLR a couple of years ago I've used C1LE. To date, my C1 software has effectively been redundant, for almost 6 months ? ? ?
Phase One, when will you release a product, any product, which supports the Pentax K10D RAW PEF files and/or Adobe DNG format?
We C1 users need it and we need it now.
Quarter 1 of 2007 has been and gone. Spring 2007 is almost at an end. No sign of anything from you yet.
Just in case it's escaped your notice, The K10D has rejuvenated Pentax sales. Even some Canon & Nikon users are making the switch to a superior (at last) product.
For every Pentax K10D that is sold, Phase One loses a customer.
Be assured, you are losing customers by delaying any further. Users are switching from C1 to Lightroom and Silkypix in droves. Wake up to a missed opportunity . . . please.
Regards,

This is obviously a touchy subject. Would one of you Phase One Staff at least have the common courtesy to reply to this topic.
Nobody likes to be ignored, especially a fee paying customer.
If this is not an appropriate place to air my frustration, please point me in the right direction.
Thanks.
PS: I am within a whisker of becoming an ex-customer of Phase-One, as are many of my Pentax DSLR using acquaintences.0 -
Hello
ohh. quite an "aggressive" post..
It is not a touchy subject I am happy to reply but as this is a user to user forum you should got to support.phaseone.com and contact support if you want / expect a reply from phase one.
Pentax K10D is supported in Capture One 3.7.7 which is currently only released as release candidate for Phase One P+ customers. The final version should be out later this month.
It is true that it should been out earlier but it has been delayed a little bit when the most important update (for us) in this version is the support for the new P+ series backs who are shipping now.0 -
Hi and thanks for replying and apologies for the somewhat aggresive nature of my posts.
Please rest assured that this is not my normal demeanour on forums. My posts are a measure of my frustration at not having the use (for several months) of a software product I have come to rely on.
C1 LE is an excellent product and suits my amateur needs exactly. I don't really want to have to go out and buy yet another RAW workflow tool simply because support for my new camera (now not so new) is delayed.
I'll wait (patiently 😊 ) until the end of the month. That said, if P1 has the updates ready for various new cameras, but the update for a new product is not yet available, why does everybody else (existing customers) have to wait? Surely the update for the new product could appear in 3.7.8
Thanks again,0 -
In this case, it was a combination of many things.
1. Resources allocated to version 4.0
2. Close time frame between our new products and new DSLRs
3. With the old platform a Windows launch includes three products, (LE, DB and PRO) and each product is 13 different languages. So one new version is 39 different products. This will change but a new version is not as easy to do as it will be.0 -
Thanks, I understand. Hopefully then, once V4 is released, updates can be rolled out much faster.

I too am waiting for the K10 support but exploring other options in the meantime. As somewhat aggressive as the original post was, it did have a couple of points.
K10 owners are using other software.
The K10 ended my relationship with Nikon. What an perfect camera.
Best wishes - BB0 -
I've spent some time tonight going through some of the threads here about the delay of releasing updates for cameras that do not enjoy support right now.
Unfortunately there are delays in the software world. I would much prefer that C1 put out a date and meet it but sometimes that doesn't happen.
I haven't read anything on the Phase One main website that says that they will provide support for absolutely everything and anything. If C1 is that vital a component of your workflow, did you check to see when the release for it was planned for or was it buy the camera now and then bitch at C1 for not supporting it immediately. I know next to nothing about the Pentax DSLR's, do they not provide a RAW converter of their own that you can use in the interim?
There have been some strongly worded posts that, imo, serve little constructive purpose. However, Phase One does need to find a date that they can live with and try to have a happy user base.
I, for one, am waiting anxiously for V4.x. I hope that they have made it worth the wait. I have found Lightroom to be fairly solid and am hoping for something out of C1 that will stay competitive0 -

My point exactly. During first qtr 2007 was promised . . .I haven't read anything on the Phase One main website that says that they will provide support for absolutely everything and anything.
No, neither have I. I don't think anybody could reasonably expect them to.If C1 is that vital a component of your workflow, did you check to see when the release for it was planned for or was it buy the camera now and then bitch at C1 for not supporting it immediately.
If I'm to be accused of bitching, at least get your facts right. I was complaining about the late arrival of C1 support for the K10D. As for supporting it immediately, I'd hardly call a 6 month lag, "immediately", would you?I know next to nothing about the Pentax DSLR's, do they not provide a RAW converter of their own that you can use in the interim?
Yes they do. I don't like it. I prefer Lightroom. There have been some strongly worded posts that, imo, serve little constructive purpose. However, Phase One does need to find a date that they can live with and try to have a happy user base.
Letting a supplier know that his customer(s) are unhappy is incredibly constructive to me.I, for one, am waiting anxiously for V4.x. I hope that they have made it worth the wait. I have found Lightroom to be fairly solid and am hoping for something out of C1 that will stay competitive
It'll almost certainly be a long wait for the initial V4 but apparantly, future updates can be rolled out much faster. We live in hope . . .0 -
PhaseOne developers, I thank you. 3.7.7 is like having an old friend back again. 0 -
Hi.
I've just started with LE 3.7.7 but realise it's no use to me because it does not appear to recognise DNG files. Is this a strategic decision not to support an Adobe format?0 -
john-g,
If you have a DSLR that is supported in Capture One,
then it is of Great Use to you, because you will now be able to process the absolute best quality images possible from your camera.
Many think it is Adobe being strategic with the DNG bandwagon, 😉
however this file format benefits professional photographers and the photo industry as a whole, you can be assured Phase One will always participate.
Version Upgrade 4.0 of Capture One due later this year will fully support DNG.
Cheers,

If you have the Pentax K10D, change your file format (until C1 V4 arrives) to .PEF. This format is supported within C1 3.7.7
An additional benefit is that .PEF's are smaller files than .DNG's because they are compressed so you'll get more images on a card.
Image quality of .PEF's compared to .DNG's . . . identical.
