Backup Sync - Best Practices
For quite some time now I've been using Carbon Copy Cloner or Chronosync to backup shoots and have found them to be huge time savers. My method is usually;
- quit C1 5x - usually at lunch, at the end of the shoot or when things get slow on set
- plug-in external drive (fw/esata/usb)
- initiate a copy / sync with ccc or chronosync
- start C1 up again when finished
I like to keep things simple and not tax the Mac too much. Less is more. But recently I've been running into issues with simply not having enough time to do a backup (processing files during lunch / client wants to see shot images / scout shots / bigger file sizes / higher shot counts) that I've decided to try a backup / sync during the shoot.
Is this something you'd suggest or do as standard practice? Are CCC and Chronosync equally capable or do either have issues? Can a session file be copied successfully while open (any locks on the file?) and with files coming in via tether? Have you seen more crashes doing this?
I've successfully done simple tests but have not tried to go live with this method on a large shoot. Your experiences with this process would be appreciated.
Best,
Nik

Nik,
I used to use ChronoSync while shooting Live and never had an issue. It's quite a low demand program and never caused any performance issues elsewhere on the machine. It was used to run the backup every 90 seconds to a second internal drive.
Granted that was before the P65+ was in the picture but with the first Gen. Intel MacPro's and a full day of shooting the P45+ the system worked without issue.0 -
Thanks Drew,
So far so good after a long day. Using CCC without any issues or noticeable slowdowns.
Best,
