keeping original filename when renaming
Hello,
Does anybody know if it is possible to keep an original/current filename as part of the image info/metadata when batch renaming files?
Thanks!

Yes, this should be possible. Can you give an example what you have and like have? I mean, before and after rename? 0 -
I saw in Pauls reply that in the renaming of a file or files you can retain the original file name. I have not seen a post instructing how to do this. I am looking for that solution. 0 -
Are we here discussing the use of the "OriginalFilename" field in the Getty Images section of the IPTC?
Or a more generic method of saving the original file name (whatever that might have been and wherever it might have been created) in a field somewhere in the meta data?

@Grant: no.
@All:
I would expect that the Original Filename token would do the trick, but testing showed it does not work (it does not do anything). I'll contact Phase One on this.0 -
Original file name token only extracts whatever is in the Getty field for use in the name string. If its empty then it does nothing to the name. I tested this and it works as designed.
In terms of a solution can think of would be to have a script in the workflow that extracts the file name to the IPTC field, then you can use the token to extract it.0 -
Jim,
Thanks for checking that out. And by the way, Grant, you were right with pointing to the Getty field. Thank you for educating me you both. 😉
I came up with a kind of solution myself by using a the Find and Replace method for Batch Rename, which is new in CO 8.1.
This does not give my the flexibility of tokens, but I can add a static prefix to a name.
For example, the original filename is IMG_0001.ext. I like to add my initials (=static information), I can make Find = IMG, Replace = PSIMG
Very basic indeed.
Jim's suggestion with a script to enter the original filename to the IPTC field would be awesome, definitely.0 -

My pleasure Paul. I have learned more than a little coming in the other direction so it's about time I could offer a small amount back!
I'm not at all sure about the names thing.
Original file from the camera? Maybe not so useful for most people unless they are very fastidious about prefixes per job. Even then I'm not sure how it would work out.
What is the original name after an image has been though a conversion, edit, various variants and output processing, perhaps being renames at each point in the process?
It could be interesting to try to agree a specification for how any related functionality might work.

Hi Paul,
I ran into this issue today.
Did you already contact Phase One on this issue as I am used to adding the date and time taken in front of the file name generated by the camera and now this seems not possible.The discussion did not make this clear.
Thanks,

Hi Martin, no new developments so far. The discussion was about the fact that there is a token for the original file name, but that is a field in the IPTC metadata, Getty section. Of course you can enter the original image name manually into that field, but a script that would do that would be much more convenient. However, no script has surfaced to date.
You can do a feature request in a support case and refer to this thread.0 -
Hi all,
I took another look at the batch renaming option and there is a solution to the issue of keeping the original filename as part of the new name. It appears that the 'Image name'-tag holds the filename as it it stored on your hard drive.
When I used that I could rename my files as yyyy-mm-dd uu-mm-ss <image name>.
But we still need a script to fill the original filename under the Getty section.
Thanks,

I missred this post initially its fairly simple to add the filename to the description field with processing. Its would have a slight impact on processing speed but you wouldnt notice it when processing TIF's. I'm not sure about scripting the addition of the filename to the Getty field. 0 -
You might consider adding the original file name to the headline field on import. Most import tools should allow that. 0
