Some NEF files unreadable
I'm attempting to import some of my Nikon nef files into Capture One Pro 8 but some of the files are showing up in Capture One as corrupted in that the resulting preview image loads and I can see the image but then quickly turns to a garbled mess with a horrible pink/red look to it.
If I then convert the corrupted images to DNG using the Adobe converter Capture One can then read the files.
I have spent quite some time attempting to find a way to repair the corrupted nef files but haven't found anything that works.
Lightroom and Photoshop can both read the corrupted nef files without any problems.
Do you have any idea how I might be able to correct the corrupted nef files so that Capture One can read them?
I'm new to Capture One by the way and am still learning.
Regards,

Any chance your .nef files were edited with Nikon CaptureNx2? 0 -
Some of my very early files were edited in Capture NX2 but all of the files I'm attempting to import into Capture One were imported and edited in Lightroom..
I'm aware that there was a problem with the import process and the way that Capture NX2 handled the files.
I'm just curious as to why, if a corrupted file that can't be opened by Capture One in then converted to a dng file that Capture One can now see it?
The conversion process must be doing something right?0 -

Thank you for the very interesting link.
I attempted to install both CNX and CNX2 on my Windows 7 x64 laptop and kept getting an "Unhandled Exception" error message which I couldn't solve.
I even had a look at the newer (but useless) NXD but it wouldn't let me export images.
Oh well...
1) Convert troublesome images to DNG
2) Wait until PhaseOne deem themselves to help us Nikon users as all other applications can open these files!
3) Win the lottery soI can get a PhaseOne camera system.
Thanks again... 😊0 -
Hi,
I'm not a Nikon user myself but on the Lightroom forum, where the same problem appears with NEF files, it seemed that this particular application at: http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftoo ... d_nef.html has worked. I believe it is a EXIF problem.
Try it and see if it helps.0 -
I have tried this very clever application only to realise after re-reading the information that it doesn't work for the Nikon D3.
Thank you for your input anyway, it's very much appreciated... 😊0 -
OK here's another NX2 'oddity'…
In Capture NX2 and Capture NX-D I've used colour tags on certain NEFs.
- CNX2 embeds edits in the NEF file.
- CNX-D writes to sidecar files in a folder below the folder containing the NEFs edited.
In both instances, the star ratings and colour tags used in Nikon software, cannot be changed in Capture One Pro.
I'd appreciate confirmation of this from other Nikon / Capture One users.
It's driving my crazy.0
