Yes, you can paste a line of keywords, separated by commas, in the keywords tool.

You might find this post from the Luminous Landscape forums to be helpful:

    Hi David,

I have sent this question to C1 support but have not gotten a response so I thought I would ask you. Can you import a hierarchical keyword list (as a txt file)from Photo Mechanic or Lightroom into Capture One v8.2. Thank you in advance for any help.

    Jed

Phase always replies to support cases within 24 hours. Check your junk mail folder or log back in at phaseone.com and check your case.

I'm replying from my phone and the exact process is a bit involved but the short answer is "no", and the long answer is you can use a surrogate raw file that has every keyword of your list applied from the other program and syncd to c1 using xml syncing, then arrange the hierarchy I'm c1.

    Thanks Paul,

Doesn't sound too difficult. At least one problem scratched. I still haven't even got my head around the other problem yet.

    Hi all,
I'm (completely) new to C1 8 pro (coming from Aperture) and find it a bit difficult to understand the politics behind keyword management.
The only way to get my keywords from Aperture over to C1 was
    - exporting the list, items separated by commas,
    - paste the list or some reasonably small portion of it into the Add Keyword field in the Filters Tool

But: C1 seems to accept only the FIRST entry in the list and ignores the rest. So I pasted some 450 keywords individually into the Filters Tool. With some streamlining as I went along the procedure looked like this:

    - klick Add Keyword in the Filters Tool
    - paste a number of keywords from the list, e. g. all beginning with A
    - the line of keywords appears in entry field
    - klick OK. Don't think you're done. Only the first keyword of the whole line appears in the list.
    - klick Add Keywords again, the pasted list is still there
    - remove the first item, so the second one becomes the first one
    - klick OK
    - klick Add Keywords again, remove the first item etc. etc.

I know this doesn't look very sophisticated, and maybe I overlooked some important facts, but at the moment it was all I could do.)

The idea of pasting all available keywords on a single RAW file and make this file available in each and every album/project etc. should work, the tricky part, however, is that you have to assign them to this special file in the first place. This might take as much time as entering them by hand in the Filters Tool.

And: Once you have a mistyped/unwanted keyword in the list in the Filters Tool, there seems to be no way of getting rid of it. I can only remove it from the files it is assigned to or correct the spelling of the assigned keyword, making it a new item on the general list in the Filters Tool. I even tried editing (a copy of) the plist file in the Preferences Folder, but the unwanted entries keep popping up ...

    Best regards
    Thomas

    Hi,

the trick is to reboot your computer imediately after editing the plist or else the changes will be ignored because in Mavericks and Yosemite there is a daemon running that keeps copies of used plists in its cache and rebuilds them from these copies the next time the plist is used. Rebooting empties that cache.

Oh and you can easily add a list of keywords in one go by editing the plist with textwrangler once you get used to the structure used for this in the plist.

I imported all my keywords, but at it diffrently.

    First
As in a post the keywords in Aperture have to be modified fort he hierarchy to be imported correctly.
    So this Aperture keyword structure:
    Topic
    ....Topic1
    ....Topic2
    ........Topic2a

Must become this Aperture keyword structure:
    Topic
    ....Topic | Topic1
    ....Topic | Topic2
    ........Topic | Topic2 | Topic2a

The modified keywords show up with the expected hierarchy in COP8, and the unwanted sections are automatically dropped.

The keyword change was done in a couple of hours modifying all my Aperture keywords.

Second: how to import them ALL into COP8.

I found some junk images from my iPhone, small jpegs, duplicated them, named them dummy1 to dummy25, and imported them into the Aperture library.

I assigned about 20 or 30 keywords to each dummy image, in the end each the keyword was assigned to one of the dummy images.

Export the folder of dummy images to a new Aperture library -- Import that library into COP8 -- wait for Metadata sync to finish.

Eventually, delete all the dummy images from COP8, leaving the keyword structure behind.

    Eric,

the method you describe didn't work here. When you are in an album/folder that contains images with keywords (like the dummy images you imported) then the keywords tool is populated by those keywords that are assigned to the images in that album.

Keywords I want to be available across all albums and catalogs must be entered via the filters tool or by editing the plist file in the preferences folder.

Check the following: create an empty album in user collections (or use the trash if it is empty) and click on it. No images should be displayed in browser or viewer.
Open the keywords tool in the library tooltab.

Are your keywords still there? If so I'm quite puzzled.
I have entered my keywords via the filters tool and they are available even if I create a new catalog with no images at all.

    Hi Frank,

you can not see but they are there. Create a new album. Copy an image there. Now open the Metadata tab and start to enter a keyword which has any other image. It can be made with any other letter suggestions.
Your approach - create keywords on search list is not a good idea. These are stored in the * .plist file and the number of possible keywords is limited by the * .plist file

    I haven't tested this but...

Can you add all the keywords to a single image in aperture and then export it with a sidecar file. Then import it into capture One.

I just tried RobiWan's suggestion. Created a new empty catalog, imported an image. COP has no idea of the keywords from my other catalog, it does not auto any keywords. It works as Frank says.

I can not test this because my keywords are already in the plist (enterd via the Filter tool). Also - what if you want to assign a keyword that is not already assigned to another image somewhere. No auto suggestion then.

But this approach is there by design of PhaseOne. It is even described in the manual. I have entered some 300 keywords this way and it works fine. I did not know about any limits to the plist.

Can you tell me what the actual limit is?

As far as I know you can do that. It is described elsewhere (luminouslandscape I think). But you have to add this image to every album/folder so the keywords are available everywhere. And assigning the whole lot to one image might be as much work as entering them via the filters tool.

Sure my approach may not be the best one. But it isn't a very good idea to store keywords in a plist in the first place.
They should be in user/library/application support/CaptureOne/keywords and C1 should provide a proper tool to manage them.

    Best regards,
    Frank
