How to prevent auto backup of originals?

When I add photos to the catalog, it copies the raw and puts it in /catalog_name/Originals. I don't need this, as I have everything backed up already? How do I prevent this from happening? Deleting the images from here typically breaks them in the editor.

    Then don't set the Import to Destination = Inside Catalog

    Some users import from a memory card and appreciate a two step import process that
    1) copies files to disk, and
    2) enter image information (file location, metadata and a preview image) in the the catalog.

    Those users never set Import to Destination = Current Location = leave image files where they are (on the memory card), but that is probably the destination you may want to use, I guess you only want the second step of the import.

    By the way, Import copying source image files to destination "Inside Catalog" or to a folder not-inside-catalog is NOT backup. The Import dialog has separate a section for backups, check it out.

    If you import images into a catalog you have the choice of locating them Inside Catalog (these are "managed" images) or outside the catalog either in their existing location or in a the folder of your choice on your computer (these are "referenced" images).

    If you opt for in the catalog (managed) then Capture One copies the images into the Originals folder that you have mentioned and it works on them from there. If you delete them from there then of course it will break things. But if you want to use managed images (I don't because it makes the catalog so large) you can then safely delete them from their existing location on your file system .

    If you opt for having the images somewhere in your file system (referenced) then they are NOT copied into the Originals folder. Capture One will create previews (the representation of the image that it serves up to you in the Viewer) in the catalog, but the original raw files are not in the catalog, and Capture One will refer to them on your file system when it needs to (for example, to generate output from them).
