Edit all selected variants
I am trying to work out the peculiarities of the "Edit all selected variants" option.
With the option turned on, select some images from a set. Hit "3". All images are rated three stars.
Move some slider, for example white balance. Only the primary variant (most-selected image) changes appearance.
Use the keyboard shortcut to change the white balance. All variants change.
Click the 'analyze' button on Chromatic Abberation. All variants are processed.
Uncheck the CA checkmark again, it affects only the primary variant.
Is this how it is supposed to work? It means one has to remember which tools work across variants and which don't.
Related question: is there a function to deselect all but the primary variant? The closest solution I can come up with is via deselect all followed by reselect. This is inconvenient because I have to locate the primary variant in the browser before deselecting.
Suggestions welcome, Campo

You basically give a good description of what is and what is not affected by the "Edit all selected variants" toggle. This toggle is sometimes a struggle until you get used to it. Some help (assume multiple images selected and the toggle is ON):
- sliders and checkboxes always affect the primary variant only
- copy/apply adjustments work from primary to other selected
- presets/styles apply to all variants
- action (move, delete, process) affect all variants
- some tools have an action that applies to all variants (like analyze chromatic aberration)
- when all selected variants are affected you can (temporarily) disable it by switching "Edit all selected variants" OFF.
There is no shortcut to deselect all variants except for the primary. You could however consider to toggle the "Edit all selected variants" off for applying an action or preset to the primary only.0 -
Thanks for confirming Paul. It feels somewhat inconsistent initially, especially when a slider works across multiple images when it's invoked using a keyboard shortcut. It's good to know this is how it is intended to work and I guess I'll get used to it.
I do find the lack of a "deselect all but primary" often slows me down because it means I have to switch to the mouse and hunt down the image in the browser. Can I just file a feature request with support or do you think it doesn't stand a chance?
Thanks, Campo0 -
You always can file a request with support. In the mean time, try Shift+Cmd+E to toggle the Edit all selected on and off. I think it is maybe faster than deselect all but primary. 0
