    1. Shoot one image
    2. Adjust Curve
    3. Click Curve Options (Small Triangle in upper right of tool)
    4. Save as Defaults for XXXX Camera

Every subsequent image will inherent this as the "New" default.

    Drew,

That did seem to work for continued captures as initially evidenced by each new capture's thumbnail had the modified curve applied and did NOT have the "variant" icon appear and they did inherit the custom curve. However, when opening the NEF files through Adobe camera RAW "as shot", the curve which was inherited as ingested through Capture One as the modified and saved "Nikon 3X Default" was still not applied to the NEF files. I obviously did not process the files in Capture One because I am still trying to avoid that step if possible.

Thanks again for anymore insight you may have.

If you want a curve to be applied to NEF files you can use Nikon Picture Control Utility to create custom curves and load them into you Nikon Camera. These curves will be stored in the NEF RAW file and will be used by NX2.

Capture One ignores whatever Nikon Picture control curve was used and uses it's own method.

Picture Control Utility is free. What is also nice is that once you add the curve to the camera you can choose to use it even if you re not tethered to anything.

However you will have to use Nikon NX2 to read this curve. Capture NX2 will also give you the best results. I use
Nikon NX2 as a first step even if I do furthur processing in Capture One or Photoshop.

You could also try baking the curve you make in Capture One into a DNG and then editing that in the program you choose.

    Hi Jeff,

You answered your own question. Because you did not process the NEF to TIF or JPEG (or other format you like), the curve or any other adjustment you made in CO7 is not applied. CO7 does not write to the NEF (or any other raw file). It saves the adjustments in sidecar files (when using sessions) or in the catalog database (catalog use) and applies them on processing or exporting variant.

Adobe camera raw can not read CO7's adjustments.
