Blurry Thumbnails with strong compression artifacts

Not that I know of and I don't like it either. If they finally addressed the fundamental performance issues with this app, they wouldn't have to resort to hacks like this. But I guess until then, it's a "feature".

Are you talking about the tiny thumbnail file or the Preview file for which you can specify the default size you wish to create and save?

If you are talking about the thumbnail file then I would suggest it is completely the wrong file to be using to view the image in detail.

If it is the Preview file you are looking at then it should be adjusting and recalculating if necessary if you re-scale the size.

What happens if you make it 100% zoom for example?

It's difficult to tell much for the screen shot you posted since even the text in the tabs and menus looks fuzzy suggesting the posted file may not be a particularly sharp image to start with at normal resolution.

    HTH.

    Hi Boris,

I think Grant's answer is the right one : thumbnails have reduced sizes, and it is not recommended to use them as a reference for work. They are here only for culling and rating. If you have some doubts about a specific picture, you should open the viewer for that picture.
As I haven't used Lightroom for long, I don't remember how it worked with the thumbnails.
    Cheers,

...which is exactly the problem. If the thumbnail is blurry, how are you going to determine overall sharpness or impression at a smaller size in order to cull the image?

Bad software design really doesn't have an excuse nowadays, there are plenty of examples out there on how to do it right. Just look at Apple's Photos to see how thumbnails are meant to work. They look sharp at every scale level and when you scroll through 10's of thousands of thumbnails they blur for a smooth scroll performance, until you stop and they return to a crisp preview.

In essence; if you're looking for more efficient culling, first import (referenced) images into an app with a proper image browser like Photos and cull there. Then import the remainder into C1 for further refinements.

Or you could just use the power of the viewer and the pre-generated preview files.

Using the "Sets" functionality, choosing the preview image size and scale and, perhaps, toggling "Select all variants" could become a rapid culling option especially if one were to set up a personalised Workspace tailored to requirements.

Maybe even workspaces if different types of shoot benefit from a different approach to image selection.

I am assuming that the Loupe tool, used if required on the thumbnail, would not be deemed to be useful if the preference is for larger whole images rather than specific area detail assessment.

Hi, some weeks ago i talked to someone from Phaseone at the StandOut meeting in Düsseldorf. I showed them the problem on my Mac and they agreed that this is not perfect. They filed a request for the future to correctly scale thumbs. So, still waiting ... and hoping. I hate it if all my pictures looks damaged ....
This is always bother me so much that i still did not switch to C1. The other thing is, that i can not double clicks in a picture in the browser to oben it in the viewer, and go back to the browser with another double click. I did make me me a shortcut, but thats not what i want.
    Greetings, Boris
