It means the image can't be edited. You will probably find you can't change the Metadata either.

Files that can't be edited include JPEGs smaller than about 512 pixels on any side - for example 640 x480.

I had some 640x480 JPEGs that I wanted to keep - I opened them with Pixelmator, and resized the canvas to 680x520. Then I filled the empty border with solid black. Then COP saw them as editable.

    Eric,

I have not checked it personally but I recall a post that suggested the size limitation had been addressed in a release of V9.

The release notes now report that the smallest file size that can be edited must be at least 16px on each side.

    HTH.

Hi Grant Interesting comment. I've beeen using COP 9.2.1 (direct transition from 8.3.4) for about 4 weeks now and discovered the 512 px size restriction still exists in that version - mmm and I have comment from support saying the size restriction is 500px. Would you have a handy link to the release note - perhaps time to raise a support ticket.

(I'm curious to know how you are finding COP9 speed on your new machine from last fall, I just upgraded my iMac and am still in the optimisation phase)

    Hi,

on a more general note, is there a 'list' or reference somewhere that defines the meaning of all possible icons in the previews? I often find myself seeing them but just guessing what they stand for?

The icons are described on this page:

You need to click on the images to see the icons clearly.

this icon telling you you dont have right to change Image !
LOOK in your License Manager you should s deactivate Capture One DB and activate your normally C1 License and not
DB " Database" you find this in C1 Menu.

The help page I referred to above, states:

View Only: An eye icon means the file has a View Only permission status. This means users have the right to view the image but are unable to make any modification to it.

    and

Read Only: A crossed over pencil will appear in the bottom right corner of an image if a file is unsupported or if you don’t have the access rights to edit a file. You might see this read-only icon if you try to edit images files located on a camera or a CD.
Note: JPEG files will have a read-only icon if the Enable JPEG Editing option is unchecked.

I did some experiments using 9.2.1 on Windows 7.

If I import a jpeg that has any side of less than 513 pixels, then it shows an eye (View-only) icon and the image cannot be edited. If both sides of the image are 513 pixels or greater then there is no icon and the image can be edited.

I tried making an editable image read-only using windows explorer, but the crossed out pencil (Read-only) icon did not appear.

I think by that reasoning in the case that two COP9 DB (i.e. two COP9 catalogs) have the same referenced images, only one DB has the right to change an image and the other does not. But by my direct observation this is not so.

I also have my COP8 dB still active (but unused) covering all my 15000 referenced images. But yet my COP9 DB is not blocked, nor the COP8 DB.

But an interesting observation, worth investigating to see if it is related to some speed issues I have complained about.

In the context of C1 licences "DB" refers to "Digital Back" and not "Database".

The Capture One DB (Digital Back) version provides owners of Phase One, Leaf & Mamiya Digital Backs with a set of highly advanced image editing tools to help streamline and make any photographer’s daily workflow more efficient, whether shooting tethered or not.

Thank you Richard - hmm, don't know how I missed this... too many manuals lately - appreciated!
