Gradients and spot removal
I am a new user coming from LightRoom and Testing Capture One 9.1 on a MacBook Pro. Love the image quality but am struggling with the idiosyncrasies of CaptureOne.
Removed several spots using spot removal tool. Then applied a gradient. The location of spot removals appear as grey boxes against the gradient. This persists right through the development process and is present in a test jpeg. The problem can be fixed if you remove the spot removals and reapply them after the gradient.
Is it necessary to apply corrections in a specific order, if so what is the recommended order or is this a bug?
EDIT: Problem occurs with white balance gradient. I've tried disabling hardware acceleration but the problem persists. This is clearly a bug and has been replicated by at least one other user. The work around is to apply spot removal after white balance gradients. A support request has been filed.

I applied spot and dust removal to a sky and trees, then added a gradient with changes in exposure. contrast, brightness and saturation. No gray boxes. Just the smudgy patches that I expected when using spot removal on leaves in a tree. Do I need any special adjustments to reproduce it?

I have a vague recollection of a similar issue being asked about before. You might be able to find the thread with the search facility, but it would be hard to know what to search for. It may have been in C1 8 rather than C1 9. However, I wonder if the answer was to do with the use of OpenCL. You could look in C1 preferences and on the general tab see what these settings are set to at the moment. If OpenCL is selected to be used for either display or processing try turning it off.
(Apologies in advance if my memory is letting me down.)

Edited to add - I found a thread that may have been the one I remembered. Actually OpenCL is not mentioned, and it is not clear that a resolution was found. For what it's worth, here is a link to that thread.0 -
Hi Hans
Yes this happens with a white balance gradient. I can confirm that I also don't have an issue if I use an exposure gradient.0 -
Yes, now I've got it.
You should tell Phase One by creating a support case on their website. Make sure to mention white balance on the gradient when describing how to reproduce it. If possible, upload an example in your support case.

Hi Ian
Thanks that was quite helpful. I would never have found it. Yes this sounds like the same issue. I've tried turning off the hardware acceleration and the problem seems to persist.0 -
Hans
Thanks for confirming. I have logged a support request. 216542. I'll provide an update when I hear back.0 -
This effect also occurs on the Windows version of V9.1.1, except the square boxes are coloured, not grey.
It happens for the White Balance controls, but not for the Exposure controls. The colour of the squares varies, depending on how extreme you set the white balance.
However I am only seeing the squares inside Capture One, not in exported JPEGs or TIFFs.
For the Windows version, changing the order of the spot removal/gradient makes little difference - the squares still appear when viewing the image in Capture One.

Edit: turning OpenCL off makes the squares disappear, although I had to regenerate preview for one of the thumbnails.
