Leica S2 tethered shooting ...
hello,
i am pretty new to the forum, am using a Phase back on a Hasselblad along with a Leica S2.
would anybody know if there are plans to allow the S2 to be used tethered in Capture One in the near future?
thanks for your input

Hi Reinhard,
I think the main question is whether Leica will release (or has release) a so-called Software Development Kit for 3rd party developers like Phase One to implement tethering. Only when that happens, tethered shooting can be implemented into CO7. The same applies to Canon and Nikon (which have an SDK).
Have you asked Leica already?0 -
hi paul,
thanks. nope, i haven't asked Leica yet. i figured it's Phase's job to implement the feature.
but after reading your post, i will certainly aks Leica.
for now i posted a thread in the Leica S2 forum.

Doing a little searching and reading on this, being inquisitive, suggests that the S2 RAW output is DNG and owners can download a copy of LightRoom bundled with a new camera sale. So there seems to be quite a close relationship between Leica and Adobe.
Most of the information I read (which may not be entirely representative of course and could be out of date) suggests that the tethering is of the 'hot folder' type. In that case C1 offers the same facility.
However I saw one reference to LR having an inbuilt option of a 'button' that will fire the camera. So far I have not seen any other references that suggest there is greater control over camera settings. On the other hand I have seen articles that suggest the entire philosophy of the camera revolves around simplicity and implies that settings, especially in controlled environments where tethering would be most likely to be used, would probably be "set and forget" activities. If so then remote control of the camera may have little benefit even if an SDK is available.
It would be interesting to know from a user how much of that is correct.
Beyond those considerations comes market potential. Even if an SDK exists and could be made available and successfully deployed, what is the size of the market that would justify the development effort and creating a support environment?
I have no idea how such a question could be answered and there would likely be a number of marketing rather than purely fiscal matters to consider.
It might be an idea to create a support case if you feel you need an official response. As a User to User forum (at least by intent) it is unlikely that there will be any official information available unless one of the Phase One forum regulars feels able to add a comment without breaking company policy. A support case is the preferred way forward and allows the C1 management team to assess market demands and so formulate development strategy. For that reason alone it makes sense to register a request whether or not it can be fulfilled.
HTH.

grant,
i absolutely agree. the tethering is a quick and simple solution to see and judge the images right on the spot, very luxurious on an 27 inch iMac.
adjusting camera parameters never seemed to be of any interest to me. i am not a still-lifer, so ...
Leica provides it'S own "tethering solution", a stand alone program, which is ok but i'd rather have that done in Capture, as i am used to that workflow.
good suggestion, i will open a support case with Phase and see what they come up with.

Paul is 100% right on. Leica is the reason that the S2 lacks support in Capture One. They have been extremely guarded about releasing any SDK to anyone. They easily have one of the most "closed" camera systems in the world and it is their customers that are suffering because of it.0 -
actually Leica is well supported in LightRoom, they even ship it with they systems.
This is why on my Leica I usae LR and not C1. on my Fuji IÂ use C1.0
