Perhaps you can post a screenshot?
It doesn't seem like their is an error in the software but just a misstep in the Layers Tool function.

Can you check the Size of your cursor?
It may be that it's simply too big to display in the confined space.

Hi Dan, I assume you meant the size of the brush rather than the cursor? The size of the brush is small and I can see it has 3 circles, the largest covers the face of the model. If the size of the cursor is different, please let me know how I can adjust it. Thanks.

So which is it? The Brush shows in the software or it doesn't?

Perhaps what you mean is that the Mask (Red Transparent veneer) no longer appears? If that is the case, you need only to turn it on by clicking and holding on the Brush tool and choosing "Always..., Only... or Never..." for the Mask Options.

    Also, who's Dan?

My apology Drew for calling you Dan.
The brush shows but the mask does not show even if I turned on always shows mask. The mask was showing with 7.1.5 and then stops working. I recall that it does not work with 7.1.6 or 7.1.7 and I rolled back to 7.1.5, which it then worked. When it stops working with 7.1.5, I then upgraded to 7.2 hoping that it's fixed but it's not.

    I am using 7.1.6 .

The only way I can find to make the painted mask invisible to set the opacity slider to zero. Obviously something close to zero might also be difficult to spot in a "busy" image.

I'm wondering whether the 'last used values' setting for the tool may somehow have become corrupt or mis-referenced. What does it report if you view the tool settings?

I set opacity in brush of local editing to 100 and that does not help. Mask opacity in tool viewing is 50% and color is red.

Wait. Out of curiosity, I moved that opacity to 100% and it works. I moved it back to 50% and it still works. So this value was probably corrupted!

    Phew. Many thanks!

Interesting. I'm glad you have resolved the problem.

That said I am wondering where the value is saved - my search had so far been unsuccessful.

Other applications would (for Windows) typically use the registry but nothing obvious came to the fore when I tried a search there. Maybe I need to re-think the search term.

Grant brings up a good point... could you simply just be brushing on a value of "0"?

If you continue to have issue I'd suggest you create a support case and we can try to arrange a screenshare to fix your system.
