C1 Pro 8 - Rotate Tool > Grid Transparency
I've figured out how to adjust the transparencies for all the overlays in all the other tools but I'm stuck on this one !?
I'm working on some very dark images that need custom rotation settings and and prefer to work with freehand rotation but the "brightness/opacity" of the grid that overlays the image as soon as you mouse down renders the features in the image I wish to reference unreadable.
How do I adjust the transparency of the overlay ? Can I ? Is it a feature request ? seems pretty basic functionality to be missing, hoping the problem exists between mouse and chair ...
Thx

The mask darkness and opacity settings for the crop and rotate tools can be set in the Preferences. Is that where you have adjusted things before?
I'm struggling to think of other tools (i.e. tools with no cropping of some sort) that mask any parts of the image, other than the overlay facility available for matching to a design layout.
Another approach might be to brighten the image while you are making the fine rotation adjustments and set it back afterwards.
If that would be something you might use many times while working in an image you could potentially create a single click approach using an disposable adjustment layer. Add a layer, set it to "Invert Mask" (that will mean the entire layer is masked) and adjust, say, exposure to +3 or what ever suits your needs. You can now turn the layer effect on and off as required using the tick box. When you are done just delete the layer.

Sorry I'm not really understanding your answer - maybe I did not define my usage enough ...
I'm trying to use the "Rotate Freehand" tool - 2nd option down in the dropdown menu that appears under the Straighten / Rotate Tool in the Toolbar Icons centre screen of the main C1 window.
Temporarily brightening in any way, (exp, gamma, black level, etc), isn't really an option since it creates just as many visibility problems as it solves.
Thx

That looks like a perfectly ordinary sort of sports image in terms of dark and light areas. I have many similar images though for a different sport. Still with enough vertical elements (for example) to make things look odd if the rotation is slightly off. Indeed sometimes when it is perfect but the vertical (or horizontal) lines just look wrong.
Crop and rotate, being two components of the same thing, share their mask settings. See my first paragraph.
If you are talking only about the grid lines then I apologise - I have never thought of the grid as being a problem in relation to the lightness or darkness of an image so did not make the connection.
The lines are controlled from the same preferences screen. No control for opacity but you can change the colour perhaps to make things easier?
You could also reduce the number of lines in the grid and/or work with a higher zoom level when doing critical adjustments as the grid line width remains the same.
Or turn off the main grid lines and work with the Guide Lines alone? You have the option to dynamically position the Guide lines as you work.

Hi Grant,
The screen shot doesn't really do it justice because of the resampling - the grid lines are about twice as bright as they appear in the screen shot.
I don't see any control for the number of lines in the "overlay" for the freehand rotate tool only for the actual crop window which I'd prefer to keep as traditional "Rule of Thirds".
In fact changing that doesn't really help since the "Freehand Rotate" grid then just overlays the "Crop" grid = even more confusing vertically.
I do use the Guide Lines but then the "Freehand Rotate" Grid still pop's up and kills any visual acuity I might wish for.
I would like to work at a higher zoom level but C1 wants to "Fit" the whole image to the extents of the image window as soon as I turn the tool on - I wish it would just stay at the "Cropped" size so I could see the image close to fullscreen.
Even the "Rotate" slider brings up the grid ...
I guess I was just hoping that since all the other overlays have options for Pos / Number / Col & Transparency this had one too - seems like it got left of the feature list somewhere.0 -
Hi Grant,
Why don't you use the rotation and inversion tool tab?
If you go up or down manually with your keyboard, if I am not wrong, there aren't any lines appearing on your pic.0
