Linear response - less noise? More accurate colors?

I think it rather depends on the camera profile. With my Nikon D7000, the film standard curve seems to give me a good starting point. With raw files from my compact Canon S110, I sometimes like the look of linear response better as a starting point.

Perhaps. I only tried it with 5D Mark III.

Just chiming in to check that you use the Capture One 7 Engine in CO7 (Base Characteristics tool).

As you might know older images - previously opened in earlier versions of CO - run the Capture One 6 Engine by default. In this case you do not get the advantage of better noise reduction that CO7 promises. You can use the Upgrade button in the Base Characteristics tool to switch to the newer Engine.

Of course, that might have already been the case.

I am using v7 engine. Noise is being handled better than in C1 v6 but still not as good as other converters. When I use linear response the noise removal is greatly improved for my 5D III files.

    Hi there,

I found the same with M9 files at (for this camera) high-ISO settings of beyond ISO 800, especially in artificial lighting conditions. I get a similar “look†as with Film Standard when using the Contrast curve in the Curves Tool, but with much more easily manageable noise, better detail retention, and (in my eyes) more natural skin tones.

This is with CaptureOne 7 and its new RAW engine/process.

Perhaps wonky camera profiles? Is this a bug, or expected behavior? At lower ISO, Film Standard and Linear+Contrast curve are much more comparable.

    Best,

Yes, that's exactly what I find: easily manageable noise, better detail retention, and more natural skin tones.
