which graphic card ?
Question for PhaseOne Developer Team : because C1 uses now OpenCL, is it worth to work with a NVidia Quadro 4000 on Mac ?

Will the 512MB Version(Standard-BTO in a Mac Pro early 2008) be supported in future releases?0 -
Hello,
I'd like to buy a new MAC Pro configured with the new Nvidea quadro 4000, is this card not supported as it's not yet in listed ?
best regards

For the Mac all (Fermi) based NVidia cards with 512MB or more should work fine, this includes the Quadro 4000 and 4800.

AMD cards for the Mac is currently in a "limbo". We depend on the driver support from Mac OSX 10.6.5 (from August 12), and the AMD drivers are not fully utilizing the available video memory.
For this reason a hard limit memory configuration for AMD cards is 1GB. 5870 is the best choice among AMD cards for now.
(also no dual card support yet)

Hi
I got a copy of C1 5 as part of the EM acquisition sweetener.
I have finally activated it (hardcore NX user) and considering going to the new PRO version (note to developers: It is bad form to put a paid upgrade as a notification in the software. Notification in software is generally understood to mean free upgrade ... luckily, I have noticed some oddball ways of doing things here so I checked before clicking the link.)
Anyway, I am further confused with all this stuff about the upgrade crashing machines. My MacPro has a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 which is not on your list. Am I to understand that
1. I should stay away from the upgrade until support is added?
2. If so, are you guys working to add support
In addition, when is the EM2 bug listed that says updates to metadata in EM2 only gets applies to C1 primary variants on Macs going to be resolved? This is a deal breaker for me.
Also, Any plans to allow specific naming of variants?
Basically, NX Versions play a big role in my workflow and the relatively poor implementations in both C1 and LR or this feature are a PITA and a big barrier for me (Output files take version name so I know exactly which version is requested from the file name)
After playing with C1 for a few days I am thinking it could replace NX is only it can play nice with EM2 and work with my hardware.
BTW, the current windows "limitation" of data applying to all variants on EM2 to C1 metadata export is actually desirable. Afterall, Versions/variants should only be PP info and metadata should be the same from a common base. can't understand why different variants should be trying to read different metadata in the first place.0 -
I can just add: The NVidia GTX285 is a great card, and it is fully supported.
The best Mac experience you will get for now is using the NVidia Quadro 4000 or 4800.

Will ATI cards be supported? I'm using a 4850 with 512mb ram and am kind of disappointed it's not currently supported. 0 -
ATI and AMD is the same thing (AMD owns ATI)
Current list can be found here

Bonjour à tous
Today I upgraded my "old" Mac:Â
2 x 2.8 quad core 12 Gb RAM / Nec Spectraview 3090 / Boot disk 256 Go SSD / running OS 10.6.5 with a ATI Radeon HD 5870 video card.
Then of course my first thing was to change in the C1 pref the OpenCL to "auto" instead of "never".
And of course, I was so hurried to check the new card that I forgot to run some time measured tests before…
However, all runs smooth (openCL) and seems to be quite faster.
I ran an export of 129 RAW 1Ds3 files to 129 jpeg quality 70 à 25% of size in 8 minutes that is an average of 3.72 seconds per file…
Sounds pretty fast to me!
I'd like to know from the Phasemen and other usershow it sounds to them…
Also I wonder if upgrading from OS 10.6.5 to OS 10.6.6 would increase the performances (I read somewhere that some parts of graphic drivers have been rewritten…)
Thanks in advance0 -

Don't want to spoil the fun, but if I am correct, OpenCL is currently (CO 6.0.1) not involved in processing raw to TIFF/RGB. This is however expected for the future.

But good to hear it is working for you, as it is meant to be.0 -
Bonsoir Paul
Don't worry, you don't spoil!
After checking you're pretty right:what to expect
· …
· Fast interaction when adjusting settings - providing live feedback
· Speed improvements depends greatly on the size of the viewer and the number of cores of the GPU
So, ok processing speed remains the same but still satisfying (imo) : -)
However this was not a real test (as I said I haven't perform any before)…
But the session I opened was new without any C1 adjustment stored.
I found that applying my user's style (colors/curves, brightness, contrast, NR etc.) was really faster and the redraw of the mainscreen (the one with the sole image on the 30" monitor) was almost instant…
Better so good enough for now! (imho)0 -
Bonsoir Nicolas,
Maybe I just envy you since my old hardware is advanced enough to enter the OpenCL playground. 😉
Enjoy your setup!0 -
Well, you know, hardware is just matter of time you need to deliver your files to clients (and yes, also to test your own limit to accept waiting 😉 ), software is much more important! 😊 0 -
Just the upgarde I'm thinking of doing to my 2008 Mac Pro.
Nicolas, which card were you upgrading from as I have the ATI 2600 in my machine and find in C1 and CS5 I get a delay when painting layer masks etc and was hoping a GPU upgrade would eradicate this. Process speeds are fine, its just the fluidity of painting that bugs me. ☹️
Thanks, Gareth0 -
Hi Gareth
I'll answer you precisely tomorrow morning as for now, I'm ready to go for a sleep at home… 😉0 -
Hi Gareth
Morning here!
FYI, unfortunately, on my Mac (2008 BTW) I had not the possibility to keep the older video card for the 2nd monitor (the one I use with all thumbs and tools) because the ATI Radeon HD 5870 needs 2 power sources…
However I can use the new card easily for the 2 monitors.
But back to your question, the former card was a NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT with 512 Mb RAM.
There were effectively some time lag with the use of the mask painting which I don't feel anymore : -)
I do hope that it will also bring some smoothness when working on files with CS5… will post findings…
I confirm that redraw of preview is much faster!
Kind regards0 -
Thanks for the information Nicolas 😊
I'll go ahead and order the 5870 for my machine.
Best, Gareth0 -
I hope you'll find good value for your money as I do.
as the NVIDIA Quadro 4000 and PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 are too pricey for me…
BTW Yesterday was long day using CS5 intensively and for the 1st time got no hanging from PS… ☹️) with memory leaks and repeated crashes on more than 200 Gb files… Has to be confirmed with time, though.0 -
A followup for the Quadro 4000 question:
Unfortunately the Quadro 4000 is currently NOT working for Mac. It IS working under Windows.
The problem resides inside the Mac OS 10.6.6. Even with a "driver" directly from Nvidia the OpenCL part (stack) is not enabled by the operating system. We have filed a problem report with Apple, and we assume this card WILL work in the near future.

Thank you Lionel for that precision, as if I had been a little richer, I may have ordered this card, as the French Apple store do sell it !
http://store.apple.com/fr/product/H3314ZM/A and English Apple store : http://store.apple.com/uk/product/H3314ZM/A
and the PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 pour Mac http://store.apple.com/fr/product/TW386ZM/A as well…0 -
Yes, thanks for the clarification. 😊
I found out about the Quadro 4000 card last night and was considering it but I'll stick with the 5870 as Apple don't have a great track record or fixing graphics drivers. I'll just have to do without CUDA which is no biggy for us Photoshop users as most of the CUDA stuff in PS CS5 just seem like eye candy and marketing.
Cheers, Gareth0
