Preview images available?
Hi,
I'm wondering if there is a way to get at the preview images that Capture One creates upon capture into a standard format? We have a use-case for files that are lower res than what is captured (approximately 30% JPEG) but have strict time constraints and therefore processing out each image to a new file via a processing recipe isn't viable (we shoot several thousand images per day).
I've noticed that the Mac can preview EIP files with Quicklook (select file + space bar). There must be some magic happening for the local system to be able to preview that, right? If we could get at whatever Apple is previewing then we could just send that version to the department needing the lower res file without needing a processing step.
I have played with changing the thumbnail file extension (.cot) to .jpg and it works fine but those images are tiny (6KB). Same thing does NOT work with the preview files (.cop). Anyone know anything about this?
Thanks
SMM

Embedded within a RAW file is a JPG preview. I believe what you are looking to do is extract that JPG preview file from the RAW. This is different than the preview Capture One generates, the JPG preview is what you are looking at when you view a picture on the back of your camera (in camera settings will be applied to this jpg preview). I've never seen any mention of Capture One being capable of doing this but I think PhotoMechanic can. There are also other 3rd party apps that can do this that perhaps you can run in the background.
Do a google search for "extract jpeg from raw" and you will find some articles and links on this topic.0 -
Thanks for the suggestion. Googling that phrase showed me that ExifTool can be used for programmatically extracting the JPG from RAWs. We already use ExifTool for other parts of our workflow, unfortunately the extract from Raw doesn't work with EIP files which is the format we work in within Capture One. Doesn't make sense to convert the EIPs back to CR2s and back just to get those preview files.
Maybe someone else has figured out how to do it with EIPs?0 -

I'm not certain how your workflow flows but can you not run ExifTool on a CR2 before you pack as EIP?
Perhaps a script can be made for automation?0 -
I;ve posted a solution in the Scripting forum. 0
