Import or Merge Catalogs & Photos from laptop

I did some research on the subject and what I found is not what I was hoping for, so I would like to check with long term users:

What is the most efficient way of merging work carried out on a laptop (say during travel) with the main catalog on a desktop system?

I need to move images from the laptop to a referenced location on a local drive (desktop) and import/merge sessions or catalog from the laptop.

Import session tutorial suggests that while C1 will do the software part, it leaves images on the laptop which is not what I want.

Any suggestions will be great, thanks, Peter

  You can import sessions into a catalog but not a catalog into a catalog.

  I keep relevant work on an external drive. No need to sync or consolidate which is a time pit anyway.
  
  Yes I know, it means carrying an extra item but it will save you time and grief.

  Could you save the laptop catalog as a session and then import that session into the desktop catalog?
  
  I, too, would like a simple way to merge two catalogs.

  I don't mind using sessions while travelling, it actually makes logical sense to have your work separated by shoots. And you can import those sessions to the main catalog, but tutorial suggests that after the import your photos will be left on the laptop and referenced back to the catalog. So I guess next step would be to move the images by hand which will break the link and re-establish the link from C1 catalog afterwards. I guess this is a legacy of the de facto ver 1.0 of catalogs in C1. From this angle we have a bit to go before getting to Aperture level where I am coming from as well. I am actually travelling right now so this will have to wait before I can test it properly.
  
  Dear Phase One, it looks that all you have to do is to provide a box to tick if you want to move your files to a new location when importing sessions to a catalog. (And a bit of code behind it 😊 )
  
  I just hope that the avalanche of money that Aperture users are right now throwing at Phase One will be there to assist 😊

  I think that the stock answer is to export originals with adjustments (which will include all the metadata) and reimport these into your main catalogue.
  
  However, what you could do is (assuming that you run a referenced rather than managed catalogue) is to copy your catalogue to the laptop (leaving the master images behind). You still have access to the previews which means that you can organise, apply metadata and do some limited adjustments. On the road import the new images as managed images and cull, organise and adjust as desired. On return home, replace your stay at home catalogue with your on the road catalogue. It will pick up the stay at home images. You can then transfer your new managed images to your desired end location and carry on business as normal. Some of the C1 tutorials/webinars have referred to this approach.
  
  However, I agree that it seems odd that you can import a Media Pro catalogue and a C1 session, but not a C1 catalogue. I sub,fitted a feature request for this months ago based on my experience of Aperture. Perhaps numbers will tell!
