Importing images creates duplicates

    1st thoughts:

    When importing,
    - are you importing to the folder you are importing from?
    - are you backing up to the folder you are importing from?

The way I do it is that when I have done a non-tethered shoot, I make a new session in C1, then close the program. After that, I cut and paste the images from the CF card to the capture directory in the new session folder. Last, I open the new session and import from the capture folder. It is here that it starts making copies.

When I first started using C1, I noticed it was creating lots of duplicates of my images in new folders with the date appended. I didn't like this, so I did modify the backup directory, but only to get it off my c:/ drive, which was filling up. I just went to check where it is set to now, but don't see a path listed in preferences.

And your 'Import To' folder is the capture folder. So you are importing the image files to the folder you are importing from. This creates the duplicates. Nothing will be overwritten, because it could be a duplicate file name.

If you copy your images manually to your session's capture folder, just open your capture folder in the 'Library' tool, 'Session Folders' - 'Capture Folder'. The images are already there.

Use the import tool only to copy new images from outside the session folders into the session. You'll need to do this if you want to apply changes (auto adjustment, metadata, style), to create backups or to rename the files automatically on import.

Alternatively just import directly from the (CF) card creating a new session at the same time.

And a backup of what you import as part of the process perhaps?

Aha! I knew I wasn't doing it right (using sessions) but my method usually worked because I normally shoot tethered so I don't have to think about this. Thanks for clearing it up!
