preview image quality before export?

Hi - I can't figure out if there is a way to see the image quality before exporting, so I can lower the file size. I click export variants, enable recipe proofing, move the quality slider, but no change in the viewer image. Thanks.

    I've found that adjusting quality slider can sometimes make a pretty subtle difference when viewing proofs but tends to be true to the jpg image that will be produced. With Recipe Proofing enabled make drastic adjustment to something like output sharpening just to make sure the proofing is working, if so reset the sharpening and process out a low quality jpg and compare it to the proof image in capture one to see if it is true.
