Best performance for catalog and files
Hi!
My workflow is: Images on a HDD - the catalog is on a internal SSD (SATA) together with the OS.
Problem: The HDD is running out of space
I'm updating my old Mac 5.1 with a new processor and a PCI SSD Card.
What is the best SSD solution for C1?
First option: OS and catalog file on the PCI SSD and images on a HDD?
Second option: OS on the PCI SSD and catalog+images on a bigger internal SSD (SATA)?
Third option: OS on the internal SSD (SATA) and catalog+images on a bigger PCI SSD?
Does it make sense to have the catalog file and the images on the same SSD or is it better to have them on separat SSDs?
Thanks for clearing my fog...

Hi,
The first option is the best, as it is cheaper, as Capture One needs original files only for special tasks (local adjustments, conversion/export into TIFF or JPEG,...). Most of the adjustments don't require originals, which can thus stay on an external HDD.
The application and the catalog work better when on the internal PCI SSD.
Of course backups are to be done regularly....0 -
Thanks.
And what do you think when working with a session?0 -

I run my recent sessions on my internal HDD. Older ones I move to an external HDD for reasons of space. I can still use them there though possibly it is a little slower. I have plenty of space on the external HDD (only used for older C1 sessions and my iTunes library). If your external HDD is running out of space you could consider either replacing it with a larger one (comparatively cheap these days) or adding a second one.
I have aliases in my Pictures folder pointing to the older sessions folders on the external HDD so that they all appear in Pictures in an unbroken run.

Working with a session means that C1 is working with the original file and not with a preview of the image - right?
So, putting the image files on a fast SSD would be faster.
Right?
My workflow is: putting new images in folders > in a C1 session I am sorting out bad images > doing basic adjustments > moving images to the other images (on a HDD) > importing into C1 catalog.
So the viewing an sorting out process should be faster. Thinking of doing this with an extra SSD on the SATA bus.0 -

No, working with a session uses a preview, and that is faster than it would be if it had to work with the original file all the time. Mostly it doesn’t need to refer back to the original file.
