Canon 1ds RAW + JPEG mode - numbering problem
Hi Everyone,
We shoot catalogues and have very strict filenaming requirements.
Part of this requirement is that only 3 digits are added to the end of the name to number the frames.
We don't usually have a problem when shooting raw+jpeg - in that the raw and its assosciated jpeg have the same frame number - but when shooting tethered and captures are set to renumber, the raw and the jpegs are numbered consecutively. ie. all the raw have even numbers and the jpegs have odd numbers.
without renaming all the jpegs it pretty much renders raw+jpeg useless.
It would be great not to have to use the camera counter (6 digits only) or be forced to rename the jpegs to match the raw.
Can we have the ability to choose how many digits from the camera counter are applied? (in my case - only the last three digits)
Or
Can capture one be made to be more raw+jpeg aware?
And ultimately - and this is slightly off topic, can we have the phase backs shoot raw+jpeg. (god I'd love that)
I think I might have to spend yet more time battling with phases appalling applescript interface to see if I can't get the numbers on jpegs to match the raw....
Anyway. Does anyone else have this problem or am I alone in the world...
Thanks
Benjamin

Benjamin,
If JPEGs are needed, use QuickProof to create.
This algorithm is different from Process algorithm which is built for Speed rather than quality.
The QuickProof JPEGs will have the same name as RAWs and will most certainly be a better quality than the in-camera processed JPEGs since it will apply color, exposure and sharpening settings.
Preferences > Capture Naming and Processing settings allow the capability to set naming protocol to your desires. There is always the Batch Rename tool as well if not happy with captured names.
Even with Phase One digital backs... RAW + JPEG = RAW + QuickProof 😉

Hi Keith,
as I've mentioned in previous posts, Quickproof leaves a lot to be desired.
I shoot/manage MASSIVE quantities of data and quickproofing up to 6 batches of 1500 images per day is just not viable.
We use a number of systems, both phase and canon - and some of our clients find it a deterrant that they cannot have their jpegs immediately.
I mentioned in another post, creating quickproof jpegs as we go destabilises our on set systems to a point that jeopardises our workflow.
The canons we use are very popular for their on-the-fly jpeg ability - to tell me to ignore one of the best pieces of functionality of my systems and revert to a comparably inferior method is, well, irritating. (especially when we have contributed over $100k to phase over the last 18 months - but I guess thats beside the point)
If indeed quickproof wanted to be 'quick' there should be a super low quality jpeg option which creates jpegs in 1/4 of the time. a la jpeg+raw in camera or quickproof settings which create jpegs from the 7mb preview files rather than from the entire raw. (think about it phase - the machine has already done half the grunt work greating the preview file)
and... as I menioned in this thread (and others) applescript in capture one isnt all that great - so its hard for me to get some ad hoc applescript solution to try and implement your suggestion in a workable manner.
So, if you could perhaps talk with your software department and see if there isnt something to be done at the very least about the jpeg+raw consecutive numbering problem with the canon.
Thankyou
B0
