Export Aspect Ratio problem
I am trying to get my head around Capture One 8 Pro as I have decided (99%) to switch to C1 instead of upgrading from LR4. I am currently using a 30 day trial.
It isn't that hard, just different but one thing is frustrating me and I am sure I must be doing something wrong.
I have a raw file that was taken with a Sony RX100 iii and I have done the same thing in both Lightroom and C1.
The camera was set to take the photo at both raw + jpg and the aspect ratio was set to 16:9 although by default the raw file will display the full 3:2 image.
If I import the photo into Lightroom, do nothing with the file and export it as a jpg then the resulting jpg is a 16:9 image.
If I import into C1 then the thumbnails displayed to select the images to import are at 16:9. Once imported though the image displays at 3:2 and if I export a variant at the highest quality jpg then the result is also a 3:2 image.
The metadata for 16:9 must be in the raw image as a 16:9 thumbnail is displayed prior to actually importing.
How do I import, display and export at 16:9, as set by the camera, as displayed in the pre-import thumbnail, and as carried out by Lightroom, without the need to crop manually to a 16:9 ratio prior to export?
Just to add. When the images are imported into C1 then the preview images at the bottom of the screen start out as 16:9 straight after import and then after around 2-3 seconds they change to 3:2

The 16:9 image you see when importing is the embedded jpg generated by the camera being displayed temporarily. Once CO has read the raw data and created its own thumbnail it will be the full 3:2 size.
16:9 is just metadata in the raw file. Lightroom reads and honours this information, CO does not. You could create a 16:9 crop and save it as a preset. Then apply it during import.
You could raise a support request with Phase and see if this is something they could add to list of enhancement requests.0 -

I have created a 16:9 crop but I cannot see how I can save it as a preset?

I have never saved a crop as preset before, I just assumed it was possible but your correct, you can't. You can save the crop as a Style though and then apply that during import. 0 -
Thanks, that worked although when I created the style I took the crop edge to edge which left the cropped out parts of the image top and bottom which is what I would expect.
When applying the style to new imported photos it applies the crop to the centre of the image but not edge to edge so it crops out not only top and bottom but left and right also. Perhaps I should create a crop to a specific number of pixels to ensure going edge to edge?0 -
That works perfectly. If I set the crop to the actual pixel size of a 16 x 9 image and save the style then when I import using that style it crops perfectly edge to edge left to right and crops out equal proportions of the image top and bottom which is exactly what I would expect.
