Unable to load images opened in previous versions in V4
Hi,
I've searched the posts but have'nt found anything that addresses this. I upgraded to V4 and removed the previous 3.7 version before installing V4. All the images that were viewed/processed (anything with the "eye" in the bottom right corner) will not open in V4. Has anyone else experience this and is there a "fix". Thanks very much for your responses in advance.

You can only view tif/jpg files in v4 - hence the 'eye'. You cannot do any processing.
BTW, there is no need to uninstall v3 - it happily co-exists with v4.

To add: raw files can also have an 'eye' in CO4 due its sensitivity for the read-only flag status of files and folders. So if you have any files restored from CD/DVD, they can (or will) have the RO flag set. Reset it from the folder level and the 'eye' will be removed from raw files. 0 -

Thanks for the quick response Ian and Paul!
These are Raw files and are backed up to to seperate hard drive from which I'm trying to access them. I'm not sure what yo mean by reseting from the folder level. Can you elaborate please?
thanks

Scratch this question....I found the answer in this tread.

I do have one more though. Before installing V4 I removed the two V3.X programs that showed up in windows "Add remove programs"
While I was digging around to try to solve the image lock problems I noticed that as well as the Capture one 4 folder there are three folders (C1 LE, Capture One 3.5 and Capture One LE) all with subfolders Captures, Preferences and Previews which have about 25,000 1 kb files in the preview folders. Can I delete all these folders without affecting the operation of V4?

Ok....Im back to the same problems again with a external USB connected backup drive, but his time removing the "read only" attribute is not working. It works fine with other conversion programs but for C1 I have to copy the file to a folder on the desktop before I can open it???? Any other ideas? 0 -
It appears more people have problems with opening file from external drive. Is the drive formatted with NTFS or FAT/FAT32? Not sure if the 4.0.1 maintenance release helps, but check if you have that one.
I will also explain what I meant in an earlier post by resetting the read-only attribute from the folder level. Not only files in a folder can have that attribute set, but also the folder itself. Since CO4 wants to write in the folder because of creating its own folder for setting and preview files, the RO attribute must be removed on the folder level.
This could also be the problem with external drives in general, but that is an assumption only, not tested yet.0 -
Hi Paul,
The Drive is formatted NTFS and I do have 4.0.1 loaded. I have also followed the instructions about releasing the read only attribute at the folder level. Still no success! I noticed that once I uncheck the read only attribute and apply it and close it when I reopen it in Windows explorer it has the read only box checked again? I this what it's supposed to do or is that part of the problem? Any help to solve this would be greatly appreciated because I have 3 backup drives that I can only view thumbnails on.
thanks

It may be significant that C1 cannot open the image folder when other converters can. This may relate to the fact that C1 will try to place its cache and settings folders within your image source folder. If it can't write to that folder, the whole process, presumably, fails.
The fact that you cannot change the folder properties may indicate that you have an issue with folder/file permissions on your backup drives. The whole issue of Windows permissions is, unfortunately, complex and convoluted, and far beyond the scope of a post to a forum such as this. Things vary with different Windows versions (XP Pro is different to XP Home, for example), and according to whether you are logged on with Administrator privileges or not.
In XP (I haven't investigated this aspect of Vista), you look for the Security tab in the drive's properties window. If you are running XP Home, you probably won't see it, so will have to do a web search for advice on how to get round the problem. Then, assuming you are logged on with administrator privileges, you can tick the box that gives everyone (= all users, that is probably just you) full control over your drives. You also need to click the 'Advanced' tab, to tick the box that propagates this setting down the folder tree. Again, reading the process up on the web first is pretty much essential.
Why do these permissions issues suddenly come out of nowhere and bite you? I wish I knew. What I do know is that it has happened to me several times, and that the problem was more common with external drives.
This is not necessarily your problem. But, unless you know different, it's a good candidate, and is worth investigating.
Hope this helps.0 -
Thanks very much for your indepth reply David! That seems to have done the trick for this drive. I will test the other ones this week to see if it works on them as well and if you don't hear back from me...its all good.
For anyone else with this problem and with XP home here is a link to a site to follow David's recommendations.

Thanks again!

I'm glad it's worked so far. Best of luck with the rest.
I like the look of the link you posted. The procedure I used involved messing around in Safe Mode, which is not something I do for fun.

P.S. And the timing was right, too. Just after I posted the above, I had precisely the problem I described on one of my photographer niece's external hard drives. The posted fix came in really handy.0 -
So far so good with mine. Glad the timing was good for your niece.
thanks again for your help0
