2 questions - masking & export clones?

Hi - I'm learning local adjustments & what is the best way to soften a cluttered background? I use a mask on the subject, invert mask & make a few adjustments but is there a way to get a bokeh or soft focus in the background?
Also I cloned an image & exported both the original & clone but the clone export later shows up blank. Am I missing something? Thanks for yr help!

  There is no soft focus facility as such, such as Gaussian blur. But you can do some things that will help in this respect. Once you have done your mask you could use Clarity as a local adjustment and pull the slider down to a negative amount. You could also reduce sharpening. But you can't reduce it as a local adjustment, so you could reduce it for the image as a whole and then bring it back up again just on your foreground subject as a local adjustment.
  
  In what format are you exporting your cloned image? Using what process to export it? And if it is cloned, how do you expect it to be different from the original that you exported (or did you make some further adjustments to it after cloning)?

  thanks Ian! I export the clone in JPEG, the same recipe & process as the original. I sometimes make further adjustments in the clone such as B&W, so i have 2 variations of the image. However as I look closer, the clone does appear in my image collection...it is only blank in C-1. Now I'm guessing that it's because I deleted the original raw file I cloned after export & the clone needs that file to refer to??

  You're guessing right. When you clone an image in C1, it doesn't copy the raw file, it just clones the variant you have made, so you have two ways of processing the same raw fil, perhaps one colour, one black and white, or two different crops or whatever. But they both just apply a set of adjustments to the original raw file, so they both require the raw file to work from.
