Thank you for the notice as I would not have known without your post.

I find I have increasingly less need for plugins as C1 gets better and better, but the NIK collection has some pretty helpful functionality and free is pretty good.

    Thank you again.

Tried some of them standalone (right click open with) ,impressive indeed. What is the best way to use them with CO edit with ? open with ? (means it export TIFF) or there is some other way ?

Is this a underlying message that they're stopping development for it ❓
I mean it was like $200 so... 😐

From what I've seen, Google basically stopped development in 2012 when they bought the suite. I think they bought Nik for the Snapseed stuff hoping to do more with mobile. I really wonder if the Nik suite will be around in a few years. I can imagine an OS update that breaks it and Google never updates the suite to work after that (just a hunch).

Regardless, I suspect this is going to cause problems for companies like Topaz and MacPhun, at least in the short term. If someone can get the full Nik suite free, even if it only works for 2 or 3 years, they will probably not be also buying other plugins that basically do much the same.

One of the things to watch is whether or not those other companies will be dropping their prices in an attempt to compete with free.

It would be great if you could briefly describe how you use them with C1. I had thought they were used as plugins for Photoshop (which I don't have).

    Hey Ian

    they are both stand alone
so use open with and chose what app you want to use Nik silver or Dfine
or what ever app you want then once closed it goes back to C! with the adjustments

HDR is a bit more trickey here the files are stored under there user foldere for fotos
then you will have to import them into C1 and store them where you want

    Hope this helps

I have tried to use the Nik plugins from C1 with both Open With and Edit With. Most of the plugins will not open raw files and those that will (Dfine, Raw Sharpening, Viveca) will not write them back in raw format (and probably can not) so there is no way to use those with raws either. That means you will have to use Edit With.

Edit With will create a either an 8 bit or 16 bit tiff or jpg (based on your choice) and send that to the plugin. You can then SAVE it and it will over-write the file you sent and be visible to you in C1.

If you plan to use the HDR functionality you will probably be easiest to pre-process those to tiff or jpg and use the stand-alone app, but you should probably not adjust them at all as the whole idea with HDR is to allow the HDR software to select parts of each unadjusted image. I found the process of using C1 to create an HDR image to be a bit of a pain as I had to process through the images twice, once to create the tiffs (HDR will not open raws) and a second time to load them into the HDR plugin.

The attempt to save the result ended up with the HDR image buried in the C1 catalog with a second copy in the file system, but no where near where I would have thought, so using the stand-alone app is probably a bit easier, although others may have found a usable way to do this from within C1.
