Tethering Canon and other questions
I have been using C1 LE for a while now (with a Canon 10D) and I am thinking of upgrading to the Pro version now that I have a 5D for tethering and all the other additions that come along with pro (when it is updated for the 5D of course).
My concern is with something that is stated in the pro manual about firewire drives. It says that there should be no Firewire drives attached to the computer while capturing as it may corrupt data on the drives. Is this a real concern? Has anyone had this happen? Is this not an issue with 5D which uses USB? Is there a concern with USB drives in that case?
I store all my data on external drives and it would be a real pain to have to unplug them all whenever I needed to do some capturing. I find it a bit annoying to begin with that you must capture to the internal drive as opposed to an external. With the way I work I would have to capture everything then move it all to another folder evey time. I find it odd that canon's clunky capture software can capture to wherever you want but this software can't. It seems like a very weird limitation to me.
Another feature that makes me really want the upgrade is the export to web gallery. Unfortunately, there is little to no description of this on Phase One's site. I also looked all through the manual and I don't even think it mentioned it at all! (as a disclaimer - it is possible that I missed it, but I did look for a while.) My questions on this would be - Can you make your own templates or are you stuck with a couple stock one's? How long does it take to create, in other words, does it process the entire raw file or does it do a quickproof type process and output a gallery fairly quick?
I am also interested in the other barely described new feature of pro - styles. Is styles merely a way to save all of the settings at once in C1, or is there actually some underlying algorithm process that changes with each style? If the latter, that is a great thing. If it's merely a full settings save, then I don't know why this wasn't here from the start. This has annoyed me with LE, if I have one shoot that for some reason I've broken up into different folders, I can apply all the settings from one image to all the rest in a folder with ease, but what if I want to paste those settings to one of the images I placed in a different folder? No dice. I can save each section of settings into files and recall them, but frankly that doesn't exactly scream 'workflow' to me. It could be that this is merly a limitation of LE and has been in the PRO version all along, if so.. please ignore my ranting on this.
One other small beef I have with LE (I'm on a Mac 10.4) is that often when make small changes to points on the curve it doesn't update the preview. I have to take a point and pull it up or down an extreme amount to get the image to 'wake up' then bring it back down to where I wanted it. Very annoying when trying to make precise curve adjustments.

I actually already have iView which I currently use to make web galleries. However, iView only takes the embedded jpegs from the raw files which look pretty bland compared to what I would end up with out of C1. Not too impressive for the client.
Right now if I want to make a gallery of images out of C1, I export them from C1 using quickproof jpeg, then bring them into iView and output a gallery. It can take a bit of time depending on the amount of images (most often several hundred). It may not seem like a big deal to some people, but I keep pretty busy and anything that can save me time is well worth it. Also, not ending up with a directory of exported jpegs to clean up after would be nice as well...

Hey, I've recently been teathering the 1ds mark 2 with C1rop 3.72 witout too much of a software problem, but the 4 pin firewire port seems to be a problem. I am using the boot, but didn't have the locking device (bottom of camera) nor did I use the booster cable. Do these items really work? it seems the software isn't really the issue, but the connection drops out randomly. the first time it happened, the camera port was going bad & crapped out in the middle of the shoot. is this just something I'll have to tell my clients to deal with, or should I go back to shooting with a leaf or phase (never to recommend the canon sytem-teathered). are my chances better shooting through adobe bridge?
