How to lose a mask and how values mysteriously change
1) How to lose a mask. In a thread entitled “Heal layer Capture One 9.0.2,†Modesto reports losing a mask, and indicates that he “might have lost the mask since it is not visible when choosing Always Display Mask.†In an earlier thread (viewtopic.php?f=61&t=21732&p=102772&hilit=wolfe&sid=f9af6cb014c2d74f7c33dc27fd2c7e7d#p102772) I also reported losing a gradient mask. Tech support was unable to reproduce my problem. With respect to these problems, I have discovered that if one creates a gradient mask and then subsequently inadvertently touches the (g) cursor to viewer, the mask will disappear even though the presence of a layer adjustment will be shown in the local adjustments tab. Message: be careful where you put the cursor.
2) How values mysteriously change. I have also uncommonly noted sudden changes in the brightness of an image that I have traced to a “sensitive†scroll wheel that seems to change position slightly without any clear input from me. This occurs when I have had the cursor over the exposure slider, sometimes occurring when I am switching between tabs. I try to remember never to leave the cursor over the exposure or brightness sliders. Message: be careful where you put the cursor.
In general, I have noticed that there seems to be fewer unexplained events when I have unchecked the “swipe between pages†box in mouse section on Mac preferences.

Fred,
Can you explain a little more what you did with the "touches (g) cursor to viewer" action please.
I can't see the same result on Windows but then it may be because I have not properly understood what you did. Or it may be a Mac specific GUI feature lacking in Windows7. It would be good to know either way.
Your point 2 is very good advice - there are a number of attributes to the slider functionality that may not be immediately obvious to people.

What I was suggesting was that a gradient mask might be lost by inadvertently clicking on the image while the layer was selected. The Help file says:
Create a gradient mask
...
"4. The graduation will be denser from where you first click on the Viewer and fade to the point of where you drag and release. If you're not happy with the selection, a new graduation can be made to instantly override the previous section."
Clicking on the image, but not dragging and releasing, " instantly override[s] the previous section" and will effectively erase the previous mask. It would be obvious that the mask is changed if the red mask is being shown. But if the "never display mask (m)" is not on, one could lose the mask without necessarily being aware of it. I would expect that this inadvertent event would happen most often if there is confusion regarding which layer is selected.
My purpose in this brief note was to try to explain how a mask could be "lost" by a user action, but attributed to possible bug.

Thank you Fred.
I thought it might be something like that but wondered if you had stumbled across something else.
