Importing .raf files on windows
I've been testing Expression Media 2 for some days on the notebook that I use to try programs before installing definitely on my desktop if I'm satisfied. Everything was almost good with my notebook so tonight I bought EM2 and installed it on my desktop. But in this pc I'm not able to import my old raw files from fujifilm even if I'm able to handle them with other programs and view their preview in windows folder like on my notebook. I'm pretty sure it's due to my "nlited" version of windows xp SP3 installed on my desktop (while my notebook has a full installation from manufacturer also upgraded to sp3) so I know I could fix it just formatting and re-installing windows on my pc, but you know how much that could be annoying.
I also already read about the solution of manually set-up the program to recognize new file types, but this wouldn't give me thumbnails preview and image editing options and this would be very annoying and disappointing too.
Comparing the list of recognized file types on both the installations, I noticed that .raf isn't the only one missing in desktop list, but is the only I'd need. So I was thinking that maybe I should only have to copy some files (maybe some dlls?) from windows folder on my notebook to my desktop one to have it recognize my .raf files. I specify again that I can already watch their thumbnails preview in windows folder. I can also open them with other viewers and raw converters. Only EM2 seems not to be able to handle them.
Do you know which are and where are the files that expression media requires to recognize my fuji raw files?
Thank you in advance

Have you already checked this setting?

Paul_E, thank you for your reply but I think that's not related to my problem.
That setting could be useful (and applied) if you are able to import images of a supported file type in your catalogue but you cannot see file thumbnails.
In my case if I try to import .raf files, they're not added to the catalogue as it seems they aren't supported at all in my machine.
I could let EM2 accept my files adding .raf extension to the custom.txt file as described here but in this case (reported from the link above):
"You can catalog file types that are not supported by Expresion Media by editing the custom catalog importer file called custom.txt as shown above. However, it won’t be able to generate actual thumbnails of the files on Thumbnail view or render preview on Media view. Expression Media will display a generic icon for non-supported files that were enabled via custom.txt file. "
So, my problem is that some file types that are usually supported by Expression Media, are not supported in my machine beacause I should have not included the required part of software in my "nlited" xp version and I'd like to know which file I could copy from another pc and paste in my desktop windows folder to have fuji raw files supported as they should be.0 -
Hi, I've got the same problem as you; i can't open RAf files with EM2 on my laptop but i can with my other PC. I don't find the difference between the two pc to resolve my problem. An idea??
ps : sorry for my english, i'm french.0 -
We've got the same problem but maybe a different reason. In my case it's almost sure that the problem is related to nlite and I'm also almost sure I'll have to format my pc. In your case, maybe it should be useful to know if you have the same OS on both your computers and if they are upgraded to the same SP. 0 -
I use the same OS on the two computers--> windows 7 32 bits. 0 -
I have to deny myself. Today I installed again windows (the full version from the original cd, then updated to sp3) on my pc but I still can't import .raf files on my catalogue. So also my problem wasn't due to nlite. 😕
I was thinking about opening a support case but I can't understand who I have to contact.
From phaseone site:
"Microsoft will continue to support Microsoft Expression Media until 25 August 2010. After this date, Phase One will be providing support."
From miscrosoft discussion forum:
"Until August 25, 2010, Microsoft will continue to support Microsoft Expression Media. For troubleshooting assistance and support please refer to Phase One’s on-line resources at: http://www.phaseone.com/support. Please note that Phase One is providing support through our online Support Center only"
I think I'll contact phaseone...0 -
Eureka!
I worked so much to understand where was the problem. During my tests I discovered that installing raw therapee I was able to import natively my .raf files in my catalogue. Strangely they were imported with no thumbnail and no exif data. Also no preview was possible. Anyway I understood that file type detection is not due to EM2 itself. My notebook list was not so by default as I thought. Thinking about the different programs I had installed on my computers, I realized that I had no Quick time installed on my desktop. I didn't install as I thought I didn't need. Instead it's really Quick Time that let Expresion Media 2 handle raf files like any other one.
The solution for me was there, just at the end of the installation progress... 😕 but I'm happy I'll be able to use EM2 very soon.
Thnks to myself 😂
(to NN227770UL: I hope you read and will fix your problem too in the same way. I tried to write you a message but you have no contacts in your profile, so I hope you'll read here my experience)0
