Clunky, crappy, Windows like interface and performance
Sorry, in the words of Samuel jackson, "I'm trying real hard Ringo, to be the shepherd".
IMHO: The interface, the speed, and the responsiveness of this program is disappointing. The icons are small and illogical, do not respond quickly to clicks, or hovers, and the performance is slow as Windows. It boots slow, opens folders of images slow, and acts like a system dog. The Processing of TIFFs is FAST, but that's it. If I can get Lightroom to create files as good as C1, I'm out!
Peace, Curt

Do you use CO4 on an Intel Mac or PPC Mac? 0 -
MacPro, Dual 2.6 Ghz, 6 G RAM, Mac OS 10.52, 0 -
Since you use a Mac Pro, I would at least expect a snappy performance (program code of CO4 is better tuned performance wise towards Intel Mac than PPC Mac). Surprising. 0 -
Just tried it on a top end MacBook, which runs Lightroom just fine and Aperture just about ok...
Total dog. Awful performance, hopeless UI (really, stick with the v3 UI. At least it made some kind of sense and didn't look like it was trying to copy anybody else).
The tools in the adjust view don't fully fit on the screen (the bottom of the curves tool is hidden) and can't be scrolled, and the icons that look like collapse widgets aren't.
The image quality (from Olympus E3 files) actually looks very good, but life's too short. And anyway, Iridient Raw Developer is better.
Sorry, I cannot see where all those months of development effort went.0 -
Thank you David! Wonder if they'll refund my purchase? 0 -

When I bought a Pro license (big mistake), it was not made clear to me that they intended to effectively orphan the PPC. When the C4 beta came out and it was a dog, they promised that performance was not optimized for PPC, but would be. Now they're whistling a different tune. Now they're just a small shop and don't have the resources to commit to the "old" platform. Wish they had made that clear up front.
Somehow Adobe has managed to get Lightroom, a MUCH more substantial application, to run extremely well on the PPC. Some teams know how to code, and others don't.
I feel ripped off.0 -
Yes, I feel ripped off too. But, I doubt that the very fine people at Phase have deliberately duped us. We should have known that a company using a Windows looking interface IS making a Windows caliber product. So, it's buyer beware, as usual.
The funny part, to me, is that I don't know anyone that uses that Windows garbage OS and yet C1 seems to make their products expressly for that lousy platform. In case you cannot tell, I don't do Windows.
Again, the files look great but I'm not willing to go through the bending over that it takes to use C1, V4 or otherwise.
Wow, i guess i am pissed! Curt0 -
i agree with everyone here! i tried c1pro 4 and i find the controls and the handles too small to work with, for some reason phase one made the software looked like the ones from windows, really bad workflow , thwe presentation is very difficult and complicated the very think the phase one originally set out with the software is an easy to use and logical software, c1pro4 is i am sorry to say way too cluttered with too many things i dont need. if only the folks at phase one will allow for the option to open windows and dialogue boxes that one needs or even rearranged them like adobe photoshop sad to say we have no choice but to use it specially as c1pro3. x.x does not support tetthered shooting with d3 or 1ds mk3
perhaps its time to check out the competition... i wished phase one would take into account what its users want instead of adding too many unneeded bells and whistles. the buzz word here folks is SIMPLICITY !0 -
I here you all and feel your pain. I'm not sure what they are thinking by essentially ruining what was a great program but since Phase doesn't play well with others, meaning you can only process their Raw files with C1 it looks like we will NOT be buying a Phase One back ever again. Perhaps it hasn't crossed their mind that this $600 program is going to harm their sales of $30,000 digital backs. Not too smart. I figure we have about a year left with this back then we'll be moving on. 0 -
Capture One Pro 4 will have a much more customizable in terms of interface and shortcuts.
Also Phase One raw files are supported in ACR and Lightroom, we do not place limitations on who can process our files, it is simply up to each company to decide to invest the time and money to implement support.0 -
Thanks for clarifying that Jon. Also Phase One raw files are supported in ACR and Lightroom, we do not place limitations on who can process our files, it is simply up to each company to decide to invest the time and money to implement support.
We have been happy with the quality of the capture of our Phase One back and knowing we have some other options for processing the Raw files will help to determine our next purchase.0 -
I completely agree with most of the other users here. Phase One really do desperately need to update the look and usability of the interface. It is like going back in time. I really think they need to distance themselves from Microsoft and make a genuinely user friendly (and mac friendly) modern clean looking interface.
Phase One have too much alliance with Microsoft and Canon. Where is the tethering ability for Nikon users?!! Such a shame as the actual image quality is great, but they really need to think about the usability and design, and make it appeal to photographers, NOT computer programmers!. It's far too complicated with far too many unnamed icons littering up the place (it's not like they dont have the space!). They need to take a good look at Lightroom and why it is so successful and go back to the drawing board. If they combined good simple design with the image quality they are known for and add in fully working features for ALL users they would be onto a winner. It needs to be easier to go from one end of the processing production line to the other!0 -
Here's my two cents after being a Capture One user for over 4 years and a Phase One owner for nearly 4.
If only Phase One had had the confidence in what was, industry-wide, regarded as the best and most user-friendly program out there i.e. C1Pro 3.x.
Even when one spoke with Leaf/Sinar/Canon... users, they almost always agreed Phase had the best software for high-end digital backs right down to semi-pro.
If only they'd fixed the slower background architecture (which is why they say they started from scratch with 4), left it pretty much the same look and well-known UI and perhaps made just a few welcome inclusions such as:
- individual colour saturation control
- Chromatic aberration correction
- user-selectable background colour for the main window (to appease those Lightroom and Windows users et al)
- Tethering for Nikon etc (or Hot Folder if necessary)
I'm hoping C1 Pro 4 is a lot better than I'm expecting, but not holding my breath.
To be honest, I'm already checking pricing on other systems. Phase have nearly lost me as a customer.0 -
hi,
i work as dig operator in italy since one year and a half after 20 years of studio experience. i bought capt one pro last january and i'm very happy about it.
now with canon mark3 and nikon d3 i have to use other software: don't tell me that i'll have to switch to other worlds, i really like yours!0 -
I use C1 Pro for more than two years. Back then there was lightroom just in Beta, Aperture was out with 1.x (I think 1.5 just was released) and then there was just beeble and for me as Canon user the Raw Program from then.
Back then I found that only lightroom came close in Quality but I went with C1 as I loved the easy to use and fast interface.
Now after a long time and a long wait and still no C1 Pro 4 and just some minor tries with C1 v4 I tried out Lightroom (1.x and 2 beta) because everywhere you read how awesome it is, plus a lot of my friends swear on it too.
So I tried it for one month. In the beginning it was light "wow", and "aww", but after some time I found out the the colors never came out as I wanted it, I needed to tweak each file and every file. Red was not Red, Yellow was not Yellow, it just looked ... not like I was used it.
I am back with C1 Pro 3.x, I dearly hope for C1 Pro 4 because there are some features in Lightroom I miss. Dust removal, per color adjustments, virtual copies. Just to name one.
But still, C1 Pro 3.x might be old, but when it comes down to quality of the output files in detail, color, and so one, it is just still the best (for me). I really love it.
So I still hold out for a proper good fast UI 4 version. One that works well on Mac, and even on older PPCs (I am not buying a MacPro, just because my PowerMac is 2.5 years old).
Please C1, don't let me hang.0 -

It will never work as well on your PPC. The speeds for Macintel are WAY faster.
The real question is When will it be released.. 15 hopefully.
Funny how no beta testing has been heard of. I guess 4.1 Non pro was the beta for the moment.
Looking forward to seeing it also as I have done the same as you and love lightroom but C-1 is the best raw converter for me. Specially for my P30.
Time will tell. I have been trying to get my hands wet with 4.1.2 but hate the hot folder deal and the loupe/sharpening/Focusing feature. I really like the older focus checking screen. the new style is clunky and not comfortable at all. Hope they re worked that...

You said it.....the lack of ANY word of a beta is a real concern. New versions of C1 have NEVER come in on time...but this one is so late as to be laughable/pathetic. It's sad that even their reps know the feeling on the street. I was told a couple months ago 'Pro WILL be out by Photokina....it HAS to be or we might as well just give up'. Well, it was ANNOUNCED at Photokina....any bets as to whether it will actually see the light of day almost an entire MONTH later?
Fingers still crossed....but then again, I'm a realist.

Software was not announced, it was displayed and any one that wanted to could have a go at it.
I thought it was a joy to present it to new and existing customers. Especially because it was quite a few that was asking about all the missing features between CO 3.7.x PRO and CO 4.1 and one by one I could show the features from CO 3.7.x in the new CO 4.5 PRO and go onward to all the new features there is in CO 4.5 PRO which are not in CO 3.7.x.
Application is currently out in beta version but this time around it is not a big public beta and instead we have chosen a group of photographers with different application areas to do beta testing.0 -

That's good news, Ulf.
The announced vs displayed thing, however, is semantics. Bottom line is that it still isn't available.
The fact that it's actually in beta is promising....but please forgive me if I my past experience causes me to be just slightly skeptical regarding projected release dates.
I'd be thrilled to be wrong on this one đ

I would be thrilled to be wrong also.
I know many and no one has talked of a beta out there, so that is not really helpful.
Phase makes a great product, but unfortunelty they are always late to come out with their products. I see a lot of others coming out faster and with more useful features.
This forum is a PERFECT example of how phase one is behind.
This forum has always been slow and hardly any information get's put out here.
MANY have already gone onto learn and use other programs which is a shame for C-1.
I still feel C-1 make the best conversions but tis is ridiculous already.
Get on the ball phase!!
Not having anything at Photokina was an embarrassment to say the least!!
PS. where are those leafshutter lens you have been promising for the longest time now?

Both Capture One 4.5 Pro and the P65+ (awarded the Photokina star!) were shown and demonstrated in working condition at Photokina.0 -
May I add that on the camera side we had:
Which was all new:
45mm D
45mm D T/S (completely reworked compared to previous version)
80mm D LS (LS=Leaf Shutter)
Vertical grip
In all we should far much more new stuff then any of our competitors0 -
I went to my local Leaf and hasselblad dealers yesterday, to get quotes on a trade in to their systems. As a Phase One owner and digi tech, I'm extremely disappointed with the performance and counter-intuitive GUI of CaptureOnePro4. CaptureOne Pro, Has lost it's position as the industry standard in my opinion, and now more than ever with very attractive offers and more stable software from their competitors, Phase is going to lose it's ground. Unless something is done immediately to appease the overwhelming diss-satisfaction from Pro photographers. I'm affraid you guys really dropped your little blue ball on this one! I'll follow this post up with a complete list of issues I have with the software. But a start would be making sessions back compatible with 3.7.9 and having an option for a classic look (3.7.9) interface, as well as fixing up it's clunky unresponsive performance.

Hello,
I totally agree the wait for C1Pro4 whatever was a waste of time.
I concur with all said about the so called "New" version-- clunky ,crashes, terrible fiddly pathetic Screen presence -- I've spent 3 days trying to activate the damn 4LE on two computers-all with Pro registered installed!
This new look and workflow is for the birds--sorry Phase you lost the plot on this one--chocolate brown --yuk--where is the lupe to read the type?
2 out of 10 --at least it was free--would'nt want to pay for it--get back the guys that did Ver3-- tell them all is forgiven at least that was legible to humans.
I sort of sensed once Phase got into bed with Mummiya--the rot would set in.
Sad to see a great software go south ,

right on!
Where is the focus utility to view the GUI?0 -
I've posted my considerable reservations and disappointments about the 4.5 Pro release, the regrets about losses of functionality and changes that impede the former industry standard workflow. (One exception, the conversion speed and the improvement in conversion quality). I do hope that steps are taken to restore some of the former features (starting with sessions as they were), and that the ergonomics and readability of the interface is improved. Look to 3.7.9 Pro for a start. 0 -

I was doing a bit of googeling last night and guess what I found?
They already use LR for tethered shooting! How about that!
I haven't had the time to test it out myself but here is an interesting link below
http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/06/tet ... lightroom/
I also managed to find some camera profiles for Leica M8 which I would like to try when I get around to it.
I think I'm about to jump the ship for good. And don't call me a rat! I've stayed onboard longer than most captains would and it has been a total waste of time, effort and money.
An absolute rip-off as good as daylight robbery!

hi not one to post on the forums but thought that i should put my concerns forward as well.
I have to agree with the majority of disenfranchised replies on this feed, but the biggest loss i feel from 3 to 4 has been work flow. I have worked as a digital operator for the past 6 years and have seen the progression from sinar h23 backs to the p45+
the thing i enjoyed about 3.1 or 3.7 was the speed and easy you could work at, you could achieve a good colour grading and if need be take an image into photoshop and do more adjustment work or comping - it was a good balance between work flow and image manipulation .
it seems that phase along with apple has fallen for the same red herring and are forgetting there core user group. we have more shades of grey and happy icons then you can poke a stick at but at the cost of functionality, I am apparently working on the fastest machine money can buy yet it feels im working on a commodore 64 with a tape drive.
i think a deep hard look at oneself is needed - at the end of the day its about taking pictures and to be honest what i have put up with over the last week trialing out c4 has made that experience very painful.
regards noel0
