Welcome to the forum, I hope you get on well with C1.

    Thanks !

I hit my first main problem this morning. In my first couple of years with Lightroom I used dng and C1 can't read them.

I found that converting them to an older dng format v1.2 (ACR 4.6) works.

Nik, I have the same thought as you been using LR for years and visit the forum, but really like to keep my options open hence I am running a trial of C1. Like what I see so far and have figured out how to use NIK plugins I cannot do without SEP!

    Cheers.

    Peter.

    Are you running 7.1.2 ?
What camera are they shot with?
Have they been saved as dng from LR ?

7.1.2 on OSX 10.8.4 quad core iMac 10GB ram.
dng converted in LR (v3 I think)
    Nikon D300

Once converted to dng 1.2 they were fine.

I have imported 7000 photos now and it has become very slow. If I delete a folder the app hangs and has to be force quit. It also seems to forget the sort order in the folders and browser.

After the hang/crash it doesn't have all the images in the folder and there doesn't seem to be a way to re-sync a folder, only re-import and then no way to skip images already in the catalog so you get duplicates which means you have to delete all the images and then import (losing all your changes)

I bought C1 because I preferred the rendering over Lightroom but I'm wondering if I was a little hasty now 😉

    Hi Peter,

let me know how you get on, I understand the catalog is new in C1 so don't expect it to be as smooth as LR yet but I did a get a bit frustrated today. I raised a support ticket enquiring about a refund but I will probably give it some more time first.

I managed to set up a recipe to export to PS (could be used for Nik plugins too) and have the file saved in the same folder as the original, the hard part is re-syncing/importing the image to the catalog. One check box away 😊

    I started from scratch...

removed C1 and all pref/cache/ files etc
    installed C1 again
    created a new catalog
imported 7000 images in one go (no removing folders / files to re-import dng as they are already v1.2 now)

It now seems to be working much smoother.

I have discovered a few shortcomings though:-

cannot see images in sub folders from the library when the parent folder is selected
cannot scroll left/right in library-folder pane so can't see full folder name
cannot select multiple folders in the library pane to display both/all sets in browser
cannot export subset of a catalog as a new catalog (split)
cannot imp or subset of a catalog (join)
some dng files not showing up again !

Nik, Yes I thought it would be prudent to test the functionality before buying and make sure the catalog was going to be similar to LR. Plus I am still wondering if spending $99 AUD on LR5 or putting the money towards C1.

Have imported about a couple of thousand images from different folders on different drives with different cameras, manly RAW's as I don't use DNG, all good so far even found my D200 lens! No problem with the D800 obviously although not sure about the color rendition at the moment?

Will try the sub folder check and let you know my experience.

    Cheers.

    Peter.

Nik, Further to the folder issue, I decided to load my working folder which has many many sub folders and a large amount of data 39.8 GB and 2248 photos. All looks good although maybe my naming has low number of characters compared with yours?

I also have no issues loading/importing images from subfolder within a folder structure (which is a great feature, btw!), but I expect OP's issue relates to showing images in the browser when selecting a parent folder in the Library tab. I'm seeing the same, the images shown in the browser are only those within the folder selected, not its subfolders. Would be good if it showed the subfolder images as well i think.

    Cheers,
    Andreas

If I stretch out the left panel I can see the folder names, but if it was possible to scroll inside the panel I could get some wasted space back. I moved the catalog and masters to my laptop and the used "Locate" to re-connect the masters folder and it added the parent folders which creates a long path, see below. This is on a 13" Macbook Pro so space is limited, I'm getting a 17" Macbook Pro in a couple of days which will help 😊

Update: I just went into Lightroom to screen shot a comparison and realised that doesn't have the option to scroll either 🤭 but it doesn't add the parent folders so it takes less room. (added shot below) you notice it shows the image count in the parent folders and if you select a parent it shows all the images in the sub folders too which is really useful. You can also shift/command click multiple folders and have their contents appear in the browser.

As the C1 catalog function matures I'm sure a lot of this stuff will be included.

You can hide the parent folders in C1 by right-clicking and selecting "Hide folders hierarchy", this compresses things both horizontally and vertically. Unlike LR however, you can't choose at which folder level it pins things as it will only show the bottom level folders. Would be great if this was an option, including the parent folder image count and display as you mention.

    Cheers,
    Andreas

Yeah, I saw that, but like you say I lose my "year" folders too.
