If your hardware allows it, I'd update to 10.7.x or even 10.8.x.
Machines that can run 10.6.x are, at best, 3+ years old and the VERY BEST MacBook Pro at that time had a max of 8GB RAM, 2.3 i7 and NO possibility of OpenCL integration. So, they're fine machines for simple shooting but their are certainly much better options out their now for shooting tethered with such bulkily and professional hardware.

The likely reason the Leaf seems more stable is because its slower, giving the system time to cope. The D800 and D3 are going to shoot faster and put more stress on the older system and that likely leads to crashing.

This is all conjecture mind you. You're welcome to create a support case and provide us the system profile and logs to get a better idea of the exact cause.

Your MAcBook Pro with an i7 processor is just fine for tethering to your Nikons.
If you want stable tethering forget Capture One and get Nikons tethering software.
IF you upgrade to MAverick's OS you can also use Apples simple tethering if you do not need to control the camera
    setting from the Mac.

You can setup Capture One to use a watch folder and load and display you images as they come in to the MAc through other software.

Capture One tethering is known to be unstable.

Also one other advantage with the Nikon or Apple system tethering is that you will also be able to save to your card and machine at thew same time. This gives you redundancy just incase you have a hard drive failure, something that is quite possible then taxing a hard drive with saving many large files.

    Capture One's website states:

    Apple® Mac OS X
    Intel® Core® 2 Duo or better
    4 GB of RAM
10 GB of free hard disk space
Calibrated color monitor with 1280 x 800, 24 bit resolution at 96dpi screen ruling
    Mac OS X 10.9.1, 10.8.5, 10.7.5 or later
Flash is required to view the intro video
An Internet connection when activating Capture One

The OP's MacBook has twice the RAM and plenty of processor speed.

Thanks apprecaite the information, my MacBook Pro does have plenty of ram and space on HD, i have avoided upgrading OS as its running the same as my MacPro 1.1.

    *Sigh* 🙄

Fred... that is the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM to have the software run. I am offering feedback from experience.

A Schwinn may be the MINIMUM requirement for your daily commute, but if it's going to be a long, hard trip...perhaps a more robust solution is in order.
The OP is using a 3+ year old computer in a demanding tethered workflow. RAM is great but does't count as much as Processor speed. And referencing the VERY REQUIREMENTS you've posted you can see that 10.6.x is not supported.

And to your recommendation, since Capture One uses the same tethering software from Nikon that Nikon puts in it's own software, using one over the other does not make a whole lot of sense.

If upgrading both MacPro and MacBook Pro, what specs would you recommend for C1, tethered with Mac Pro and post work on macpro? Are there faster/better cable options with D800?

The best recommendation is to simply get the best equipment that meets your budget. The beefier the processor the better and 16GB of RAM is quite sufficient. Not that theirs an alternative option anymore but SSD is a must.

The D800, to retain consistent performance, needs to be used with an externally powered USB hub.

The D800 just seems flaky when tethering with long cables (10ft and up) for me. I've tried many options but still get too many crashes. My only solution is to use the short cable that came with the camera. USB3 seems more sensitive to power fluctuations.
Nikon released a firmware upgrade today for the D800 but I've not applied it, hoping someone else (or PhaseOne) will do it first, test it with C1 and give it the all clear. Not sure if they need to supply PhaseOne with an updated SDK too to take advantage of this firmware upgrade (many Nikon cameras got firmware upgrades today). Otherwise it's back to trying a different vendor for powered USB hub / cables...

I have constant and frequent crashes with Capture One Pro (7.2.1) (not just with latest update), shooting tethered to MacBookPro5,1 running 10.6. Seems worse with Nikon D800E but also with D3, more stable with Leaf back. Starts shooting tethered ok, no problems with camera connectivity, will crash if the key or trackpad is used.

If I might add my personal experience with D800 and Macbook....

First of all there is no reason at all to run an old system. They are free for god sake! Also get the best quality USB cable!!
It makes all the differnce in the world. I used to bitch and complain until one day I bout the good cable.... and now I am happy camper.....
