Advice partitioning memory to PS5
Hi Does any one have any advice regarding allocating memory resource (8Gb in my case) between applications. I find when running CO7 as my raw developed and editing in PS (+ to get plugins such as NIK) everything (CO, PS, plugins) runs very slow, but if I process the raw file in LR4 to PS it seems quicker. Currently I have PS running about 1/2 of the RAM: higher I have found meant that Topaz remask would crash if doing detailed masking. (Im using a 2010 MBP and OS 10.6.8 if that makes any difference). Id appreciate any advice from those more experienced or knowledgable abut such things. Thanks Brandon

First, I suggest you use Activity Monitor to monitor the memory use of each application and experiment with some settings (in particular with Photoshop).
Another note is that although a 2010 MBP is still a great machine to use, CO7 is considerably more demanding on hardware resources (processor, RAM, disk) compared to CO6. Using PS CS5 in parallel can easily slow down your workflow. So one tip is not to run them at the same time.
Regarding RAM, 8 GB is not that much with current 64-bit applications but you might be aware of that already. It is however the max. value for your machine as far as I know. You could tweak CS5 to only load the necessary plug-ins (I am not an expert in this field however).
Regarding the disk, a 2010 MBP can still benefit from an upgrade to SSD to give it some extra lifespan.0 -
Thanks Paul, for very helpful advice. I guess I will "batch" tiffs from CO7 to an output folder, close the application and then open PS and load the tiffs: it may actually be a smarter way to work for me to. In New Zealand where I live SSD are still realy expensive so I may wait for a machine upgrade eg 2013 and preferably when in USA or somewhere where competition exists! 0
