I have been using Phase-One RAW picture producing products now for some time with my Windows systems and in shot find it time end my relations with this product.
I have been in the photo industry for 30 years and seen many changes as many have in the technological methods of picture development
Phase-One product most defiantly has bought some excellent prepossess to we photographers that now rely on fudging our RAW digital pictures to the point that sometimes they are nowhere close to what we first saw in the lens, that is creativity and I enjoy it. But now I feel that being a dedicated follower of the realm of RAW pictures it time to find another source to render my RAW editing work with. In the passed years it seems as we the people behind the lens had been asked to upgrade to the next level and then to the next level and so on to the point that I feel I have fallen into the zombie ways of just following on to the next level and pay some more without a blink of an eye. I myself will exit this long bus ride that seems to cost $300-400 every time only with small amounts of change and not one offer to a loyal follow of maybe one free upgrade or even 75% off.
I have found several companies that offer a nice RAW imaging product, not as nice as Phase-Ones but with lower costs and some offering very low cost to upgrades.
Thank you Phase-One for the journey and your wonderful product.

Are you aware of the upgrade offers for existing users?

The numbers you mention suggest not.

However consider too that many major software companies are seeking ways to ensure that they generate cash flow and you will, more than likely, end up renting your core software components in the world of Windows in a similar way to the way Mac users have to - unless you can operate frozen in time. (More or less).

I have some sympathy with the essence of your point of view. However the reality for many is something different - they will, to at least some extent, NEED some of the developments that are developed - whether headline or under the hood - and those developments have to be funded somehow.

You could consider the free software available from Open Source projects and developed by enthusiasts and volunteers.

There are some excellent products available though perhaps limited somewhat in overall scope and features as time goes by. Also no guarantee of continuity or feature development. But they are at least free so no cost if things don't work out other than your time finding and learning another application.

They probably work best and least frustratingly, in my experience, for relatively low volume throughput where support for bells and whistles and the latest camera bodies is not necessarily expected to happen soon if at all.

They also appeal to people who have elected to vacate Mac and PC world and jump to Linux based computing since very few (any?) properly commercial applications offer Linux support for Photo Editing and indeed many other typical "desk top" application.

Meanwhile you are invested in Capture One it seems so check out the upgrade pricing options and the activation control arrangement that you have over your (up to 3) activations to see if there is more on offer than you imagined there was. Outside the Open Source world I think you will find the options are pretty much the same everywhere.

You don't have to upgrade, you're current version will continue to work as before.

Currently Phase one also offers upgrade pricing from the previous two versions (99 euro). As long as they keep doing that you can skip a version to save the expenses.

Just pay an annual subscription fee.

I've been a C1 user since Version 3 and have continuously taken advantage of the upgrade pricing to stay current. This was important since I was steadily replacing my cameras with the latest versions and upgrading C1 was necessary in order to have a version that would process their files. This was during the infancy of digital imaging and now, as maturity has arrived, I find my current cameras to be sufficient to my needs. So purchasing future C1 upgrades is now discretionary depending on how I value the new functionality they provide.

If you don't like the software, then don't use it. There's no need to whine about it. 😭

It is rather pompous and self-indulgent, isn't it?

    Nobody cares...
