Keywording in Media Pro
Hi,
I recently started using Media Pro. Sat down and keyworded a large batch of files. I found MP very efficient for this, but still spent a lot of time on a large batch.
Then loaded it all into a cloud drive. My intention was to build a searchable database on web. But, after uploading I found absolutely no keywords.. Are these stored in sidecar files only usable with MediaPro? Or, have I got any settings wrong?

Did you use the >Action >Sync Annotations to write them to a XMP Side car file? If not then the keywords are only stored in the catalogue file which only MP can read. 0 -

DAM applications like MediaPro need a manual operation to synchronise information from database to images or vice versa. They don't 'touch' the image directly, you need a image browser for that like Adobe bridge.
However i don't consider this as a shortcoming, some information you want to keep private (notations about clients i.g.). So with a DAM you push specific information into the image on the moment you want it.
With scripting you can perhaps make this proces easier.

Seems like I just have to go back to my old workflow then, using Bridge. I never really got started with Expression Media and Media Pro, then when I decided to start using it.. can't use it for what I planned, at least what I considered most important.0 -

Can you please clarify something for me... if "diver" is willing to use Expression Media (instead of Media Pro), would Expression Media satisfy "diver's" needs (since it writes keywords to the image directly, via syncing)? Or am I misunderstanding diver's question (and your reply)?0 -

Expression media(wasn't it) became Media Pro. I bought the first of them, then upgraded. Never really got started in EM. Is that clarifying?0 -

The reason I was confused is because Expression Media does not use side car files (as far as I know), so if your question is "how can I store keywords directly into the image file" then Expression Media might be a possible solution for you.
But maybe I misunderstood your question and Roelof's answer.0 -
Hmmm, there is some confusing.
The principles on syncing as i described are the same for Expression Media as for Media Pro. (EM is the predecessor of MP, they share most of their sourcecode). None of them thouching the images directly. They only 'pushing' the Keywords (or other metadata) into the image when you give the command for it. (Side-car or not is a whole another cup of tea)
So, when this is the most important function diver want to use, he better uses bridge for it i think.
A DAM like EM / MP is for organization purposes mainly. The 'virtual folder' structures you can build with catalog sets are very, very powerfull. With 'real' folder structures you can not do the same without duplicate images (and they are a misery to support).
The confusion is not made bigger i hope?

I guess I'll go back to bridge for keywording. Then see if I can get past old habits of filing system and learn to take advantage of Media Pro. Or change to Lightroom and dump my Phase One software, because of all the nice plugins available for LR. (And because P1 don't see psd files... irritating!)0 -

Perhaps I'm having trouble seeing the benefit of Bridge for diver because I don't use Bridge. I am accustomed to using EM's manual synchroniziation process.

Yes, you are right. Diver is Asking this and the answer is no. MP or EM are not able to do this.
I tried to convince him of the quality of a DAM for other purposes but in what he wants bridge is sufficient. He knows bridge even so the step is small. In his case even lightroom is a better choice than MP. Now, with the new version and the big price drop it's stiff competition for PhaseOne!

With LR you can choose either to automatically sync metadata as it is added, or not in which case it acts as MP does.It also tells you with a warning sign on the thumbnail if metadata has been added by another program. 0 -
Thanks! Then it's set. I'm buying Lightroom. Then we'll see if I continue using C1, MP is out. Capture One pro is a fantastic program, I will be hard to convince to stop using that. 0 -

I also considered LR for image processing and DAM, but made the decision for CaptureOne (C1). After some trouble with MP and C1 I decided for IdImager as my DAM and C1 for advanced RAW editing. This works perfect for me. Strange that the workflow for metadata between IDI and C1 looks much better than between MP and C1.
