Storing catalog on separate drive?

Hi all, have just swapped out my macbooks HDD for an SSD and want to use the HDD to store larger files, eg images.

So if i do this Im wondering if there's a downside?

Ive googled, checked the helpfiles and watched the phase one vid on this and its mentioned that its still possible to edit etc in this offline mode but seemed to imply full functionality would be restricted or am i misinterpreting that?

Anyone do this?

    The best way is to store your files (RAW) on your external drive and your catalog on your computer, unless your catalog contains your RAW images.
    Going that way will allow you to edit your files offline, but I think (to be confirmed) all the functionalities won't be available anyway (e.g. local adjustments).

    ..... and of course exports (outputs) are not possible.
