Off Site Backups?
I recently had an external drive fail loosing many files i.e. photos. Although since I moved to a Raid 1 environment, I'm also rethinking the backing up part of my workflow.
Has anyone bee able to come up with a workflow that will allow me to back up my large P45+ files, on average 250mb, remotely while keeping the integrity of the files?

Key in my workflow is that from the moment the images are imported from the memory card into the computer, always two copies exist. To start with this is an internal and external drive. The external drive has a disconnected state by default, the internal drive the workable copy.
When I make a periodic backup to read-only media, only the internal drive space is cleared for these images. However, I make two copies and store one off-site. Only after off-site storage is done, the external drive images are removed as well.
An online external drive, either single drive or a raid set, is not a backup. Its just extra storage.
Not a waterproof workflow, but it maybe gives you an idea for yours.0 -
Great points. The reason I prefer a RAID 1 is due to the fact it mirrors everything to the second drive just in case one fails during the process which is what happened recently. Your workflow and mine sound similar however when storing offsite I was hoping to find a solution that would allow me to simply upload my files as opposed to burning DVD's which is what and have been doing. I travel a lot like most people and moving files around via DVD's or through some other medium isn't always the smoothest offsite backup method for me. ALthough again the challenge to online storage is the size of the files. [quote="Paul_E" wrote:

Hmmm
certainly an interesting way, but how can we be sure that such hosting companies will last long? (I mean long…)0 -
What about something like a Drobo via VPN?
Not sure how realistic uploading PhaseOne files across the internet is though... most public connections will time out after so much data transfer.0
