Smart Albums are broken or I don't understand them
Or possibly both. But I'm leaning toward the former. 😊
I'm a brand new user of Capture One for Sony. And in fact a brand new Sony camera owner. I did my very first session today, and my first experience with Capture One could be better. I am getting wildly inconsistent behaviour with Smart Albums: for example, if I click back and forth between Recent imports and a Smart Album, the count of the smart album changes variously.
I decided to try a workflow in which I star images I want to keep, and leave images I don't want with a 0 star rating. I thought I'd create a Smart Album called "Abandoned" that matched on 0 stars. (I also tried < 1 star.) When I went into this smart folder, having done nothing yet but import my images, I found something like 14 images, even though I imported 360 into the catalog. As I click back and forth, the count changes, 15, 18, 14, etc.
You kind of have to see it to believe it, so here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dl4PAjbPeLE
I tried verifying the integrity of the catalog file and it passed.
I'm running Capture One for Sony 10.1.2.23 on Windows x64, 64GB RAM. The Catalog is on a local SSD, and during import all files were copied to my CIFS-attached NAS. All files are Sony RAW (ARW).
Here were the steps I took:
I'd be grateful for any suggestions!
Jason.
P.S. My apologies for that absurd username. I didn't pick it!

Here were the steps I took:
- Created a new catalog called "2017" located on a local SSD.
- Imported images from a local SD card. I selected the specific images I wanted. The import destination was a directory on my NAS.
- I waited as the import and preview generation took place. (BTW, the preview generation is much slower than it needs to be. A bit of parallelism would go a long way!)
- I scrolled through the 360 images and they looked to be intact.
- I created a new Smart Album user collection called "Abandoned" with a rule where rating is 0 stars.
- I clicked the Abandoned smart album and expected 360 images, but instead got something like 14, and that number keeps changing as I click away from and back to the Smart Album.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions!

A smart album refreshes in real time.
How much time are you giving the NAS?
Have you run a comparison with the same catalog if you move the RAW files (I assume) from the NAS to an internal drive?
You can change your pre-allocated name by logging in to your user account.
HTH.

Which I could understand if the count continually crept up. But it's both up and down as I go back and forth between the Smart Album.

Hours? I mean I guess at this point C1 has been open for many hours and the smart album still isn't updated. Actually, as of now, the image count in the smart album has stabilized at 0.

I don't think this is a problem with my NAS. I can transfer around 105MB/s sustained (saturating my 1GE network link).[quote="SFA" wrote:
I haven't, but I don't expect it will matter, because as I play around more I see proper behavior with the other filter rules. For example, if I change the smart album to search for images with year 2017, I get the expected number. Or image height. Or display name. Or keywords. Or focal length. Or aperture. Or ISO. Or rating with > 0 stars. Or any non-black color. All good.
Have you run a comparison with the same catalog if you move the RAW files (I assume) from the NAS to an internal drive?
Consistently broken: matching no color tags (black), matching 0 stars.
If the argument is that it's a design decision not to allow matching these things, it doesn't explain why the counts change randomly as I bounce in and out of the smart album.
I suppose I've gathered enough details here to submit a proper support request. I feel this is unambiguously a bug.[quote="SFA" wrote:

Jason,
I don't see this sort of problem although filtering can produce some interesting and unexpected numbers for a while every now and then but there is usually a reason, or so I find!
On the other hand I use sessions mostly. Rarely play with catalogues.
I know it's a new catalogue but try running a verification process on it just in case there is something strange happening after the import.
I quite often select on the basis of no rating, usually using the filter tool in the tool panel for convenience, but cannot think of a time when I have listed for no colour tag.

I'd believe there could be unexpected reasons for filtered counts that's explained by my own lack of understanding, but I don't think the counts randomly changing in either direction as I click away from and back to the smart album could be explained by my lack of understanding. 😊
The filter tool does show correct results for 0 stars. So, like you, this is what I'm using in the meantime instead of the smart album.
I did run verification on the catalog a few times and it checks out. Restarted C1 and also rebooted. Same behavior there.
I opened a support request. Guess we'll see what Phase One says next week.
Appreciate the replies, Grant.0
