Upgrade - Free or Paid?
So I have C1 PRO 4.7.
When I go to help -> License Information within the C1 PRO 4.7 program
I see that I have (1) Free Upgrade remaining
Directly across from the number of upgrades remaining is a help link with the question "What is a free upgrade?"
That help link, links to this page:
http://www.phaseone.com/Search/Article. ... nguageid=1
On that page it states:
"Upgrades:
In general a major upgrade of Capture One implies that it is a paid upgrade, also to existing customers.
As an example Capture One 4 is a major upgrade from version 3.x
A free upgrade lets you use a major upgrade of Capture One at no extra cost."
I only completed the 8th grade, but what I read is that , a major upgrade implies that it is a PAID upgrade, but it also states that "A FREE upgrade lets you use a major upgrade of Capture One at no extra cost".
It also defines a major upgrade as moving from V3 to V4. So I assume moving from V4 to V5 is a major upgrade as well and based on this I have a FREE upgrade which can be used for MAJOR upgrade.
So I read the release notes:
http://69.64.47.32/330a3505-0085-4247-a ... 0Notes.pdf
This is confusing:
"This new release of Capture One comes in three versions: 5.2, 5.2 PRO and 5.2 DB.
Capture One 5.2 is a free service release to existing Capture One 5.x owners.
Capture One 5.2 is a paid upgrade to customers with Capture One 4.x and 4.x PRO and a free upgrade to customers with Capture One 4.x DB.
Capture One 5.2 PRO/DB is a major upgrade to the respective versions of Capture One 3.x. Existing customers with Capture One 3.x PRO/DB can upgrade to a similar version of Capture One 5.2 at no extra cost."
Again relying on my 8th grade education:
When I read this I come away with...C1 V4 PRO to 5.2PRO is a PAID upgrade. But existing customers with C1 V3.x PRO can upgrade to 5.2 PRO at no cost.
So if I would have continued to use V3.7 PRO I could move to 5.2 for FREE, but since I upgraded to V4.7 PRO now I have to pay to move to 5.2 PRO? Makes no sense, but given the 8th grade thing what am I missing here?

CaptureOne V3.X Pro was supplied with 2 free upgrades but was very expensive. The first allowed the use of Capture One Pro V4.X and the second allowed the use of CaptureOne V5.x. Thus all V3 Pro owners have the right to use V5.x at no additional cost.
By Contrast, Capture One V4, when purchased, did not come supplied with any free upgrades but it was much reduced in price. Hence those that originally bought V4 without upgrading from V3 have to pay for the major upgrade to V5.
As you say, you have CaptureOne V4.7 Pro and you have 1 'free upgrade', then you must, originally have purchased CaptureOne V3.X (as indeed you also state) and then used the first of your two free upgrades to upgrade to V4 Pro. Thus you have one remaining free upgrade which can be used to upgrade to version 5.X Pro at no additional cost.
However, you will then have exhausted all of your free upgrades and thus, when V6 comes out, should you want to upgrade, you will have to pay for the upgrade as will all other V3, V4 and V5 users.
CaptureOne version 3.x LE was supplied with only one free upgrade which could be used to upgrade to V4. Thus V3.x LE users have to pay for the upgrade to V5 as implied in the release notes.

Wade, I do not believe it works like that. Version 5 is Thomas51's upgrade whether he uses it or not, and he would have to buy the upgrade to 6 anyway. He may want to look into that, I may be wrong. 0 -

I believe your logic is correct. You can't skip a version release assuming saving your free upgrade.0 -

In my posting I explicitely said:[quote="Wade" wrote:

I did not say anything about skipping versions. However I did also say:[quote="Wade" wrote:

which implies that versions can not be skipped.
I believe that everything I said represents the situation as it pertains to the OPs question. It was not meant to be an explanation as to how the system works. That should be left to Phase One staff.

Does this not imply if one was to skip 5.x, they can upgrade to version 6 for free? I only commented since I felt some clarity was needed.0 -
If you purchased Capture One 3.x.x and received 2 free upgrades, your key is good for the two upgrades IMMEDIATELY following Capture One 3. Hence, the upgrades are valid for version 4 and version 5. If you never upgraded to Capture One 4 when it was available, you have lost that upgrade. 0 -
OK, so installed 5.2 PRO and it accepted the keys, so good to go.
I am already liking the quick tab customization.0
