rendering: Apple or Capture 1
This is probably a silly question, but I'm not sure I understand how this works.
If I choose C1 to do the rendering, does that mean that C1 builds all thumbnails and previews in MP.
If so, what happens with file formats that C1 doesn't recognise?
Or is it just a case of C1 building previews for files that it has processed, so you see the preview as it looks in C1.
I fear this is going to blindingly obvious, but it isn't to me at the moment.
Thanks,
Cheers,
Graham

No such thing as a silly questions...
TLDR; C1 rendering only displays raw files supported by Phase One.
My guess based on experience is C1 rendering will show how its raw converter interprets the raw file. If you have made adjustments in C1 using Sessions then Media Pro can display those too.
Using Apple rendering shows how Apple Preview.app would display the file. If you set Media Pro media rendering preferences to 'Use embedded preview' then it will use the preview inside the file - if it has one. Nikon NEF and Canon CR2 files will show the preview generated in camera. Adobe DNG files will show you the preview generated in ACR.
iView MediaPro, the grandfather of Media Pro, used Apple QuickTime to render a large number of file formats (99+) including JPEG, PNG, MOV, AIFF, etc. Microsoft acquired iView and removed QuickTime dependancy on the Windows version. Not sure if and what Phase One use now.0 -
Thanks Robert,
So, just to confirm this, if I choose C1 rendering, the initial previews generated, at 1920 pixels wide in my case, will only be generated for raw files recognised by C1. Is that correct.
Will raw files not recognised by C1 just come up as an empty rectangle, or will MP default to the built in preview.

As long as Apple Image IO can render the raw image you'll get a preview and thumbnail.
The only reason to use Phase One rendering is to show adjustments made in Capture One. I use Apple rendering as it's far quicker and always use the raw option to " Use embedded preview (if available) ".0 -
Thanks again Robert,
I would like to use the C1 rendering (I think) but was concerned that if I switched it on, I wouldn't get previews for files that C1 didn't support, but from what you have said this shouldn't be a problem.
