Feature Request - Geotagging
Dear PhaseOne Development Team,
Can you please add geotagging functionality to your 'tagging software'. Here is what my workflow would look like:
Set a new location:
1) Open a window with google map/earth
2) Select a location on the map either manually or by entering an address. It should be possible to refine the location by moving the location pin on the map.
3) Without having to close the above window, in MP select some images and then apply the coordinates on the map to those images (for instance by right-clicking the image and selecting an appropriate menu entry). I think google also has elevation information so that can be added as well.
Apply coordinates from an existing file:
1) For a selected image with GPS data select "Show Location on Map"
2) A window with google map/earth opens with the location marked (or if it's already open the map moves to that location). Allow refining the location by moving the location pin on the map.
3) Same as step 3 above.
It should also be possible to automatically set the City, State, Country, and ISO Country Code based on the GPS data. This could for instance be done by selecting some images and then apply an Action "Reverse Geocode...". In the dialog there should be an option to either overwrite existing City/State/Country data or just add it when the field is currently empty. If you want to get fancy add an option to "prompt if different" so if there is already data there but it does not match with what MP calculated then let the user decide which one to use.

This was one of my first questions when PhaseOne dishmolished this function in the converstion from Expression Media to Media Pro. They considered the Google maps 'external pop up' (when you images contain already GPS data) a serious alternative to the fully Bing Virtual Earth integration in Expression Media:
Also when your images had no GPS data, it was very easy to add it. Only thing you had to do was to drop the image on the right position on the map.

However, my request was from may 11 2011 (id 88805) and this was the answer:I can certainly pass that suggestion along however the adjustment is seen as an improvement as appose to a step backwards. The tool now simply requires some form of GPS Location data to work.
The adjustment for the "View Location on Map" was made to reference Exif Data primarily. If you add Latitude and Longitude to an image (one without embedded EXIF data) in the proper Annotation field then you can view the tool just the same as images with embedded coordinates. This adjustment is to keep in line with industry standards for Exif/IPTC data.
After this the issue was closed by phase one and i never hearded anything about it.

I did try geotagging years ago (iView days) but it did not quite work out for me. I got Impression Media but did frankly not realize they added geotagging (or maybe it came in a later version). Now I am definitely going to geotag. For now I will use the Adobe Photoshop solution for that (and when Adobe makes tagging and converting MP catalogs easier I'll move over).
Now for the tagging itself, I like your idea of just dropping images on the map. This makes it pretty consistent with the rest of the program. The only critical point is that they show you a regular cursor (and not images) on the map so you can drop them precisely. One advantage with what I listed is that it's easy to assign multiple sets of images to the exact same location. That could be critical when you do a reverse geocode (determine city/state/country/country code based on the longitude/latitude) as you only need to reverse encode it once.
Another very helpful feature with the Google Earth approach I use is that I can store some of the often used locations. Then I just double click on that stored location to return to the same point and assign those coordinates to the images.
Btw, I think maps are needed both for looking up already embedded GPS data as well as for setting new ones. The former is important because sometimes the GPS recording might lag behind and you need some quick way to verify that GPS information in the images is indeed correct. Case in point, I was on a boat from one island to antoher one. Some of the images taken on the second island were tagged with coordinates in the water between the two islands. It was very easy to find this by clicking on the gps data in the image which pulled up the map. I then just moved the cursor on the map and retagged the images with the proper coordinates. I did this with all the other images until I verified the GPS coordinates caught up with the actual location.0 -
rmoorlag, in regards to your submission, it's a little known secret that Dilbert is heading the Media Pro division at PhaseOne... Actually, he was initially hired when Microsoft acquired iView Multimedia. After the acquisition by PhaseOne Dilbert stayed as the main asset for stratigic planning for product development...
