Some Previews and Thumbs corrupted after card import
Hi all,
I have not really enough info currently to open a support case, I will wait for my next big shooting, but I expirienced some problems with previews and thumbs upon importing RAW's from CF cards:
I normally import the pics from the cards using capture one straight away. During import, I add some standard style and also some auto adjust (mostly just tone curve), I choose to delete pics after download and to eject card after download has been finished.
This works pretty well and it's quite handy...
Now I had two cf cards last week with around 400 pics, which I imported. Basically it worked fine, but I had around 10 pics, where the thumbnails where corrupted. I have to explain what I mean as I had no time for making a screenshot. The thumbs looked like an overlay of two different pics, it showed on the right lower corner and overlay with the left upper corner of one of the other pics. It looked really strange, I nearly got a headache as I thought first, the whole RAW file was corrupt, because when I opened the pic in full screen, it showed the same strange thing. I could edit the picture normally, but the whole right lower corner (a quarter of the pic) showed the overlay of another pic I imported. I've never seen something like this, I opened the RAW file then in Mac preview and it was shown normal, so quite a huge rock fell from my heart 😉
What I have done then, I went into the finder, deleted the complete "capture one" folder in the folder, where I imported the pics before, which means I deleted all previews and C1 settings for these files.
I then re-opened the folder in C1 and then C1 showed all thumbs correctly. Of course I had to apply my standard style and auto adjustment again then, because all settings I applied during import where gone.
What I could have tried was, to regenerate the previews, but I actually discovered this function only afterwards, after my first panic, maybe this would have helped as well.
I tested around then a bit, it does not happen definetely when I open some older projects or any other folder with raw files, previews are always rendered properly, it seems to have todo with the card import.
Beside that I have to say, that C1 7 runs quite stable on my MacMini (about 3 years old, 4GB of RAM), maybe sometimes a bit slow, but this is propably caused by the bit weak MacMini and not a problem for me. It runs faster on my MacBookPro, which is a bit newer. But speed is not really a problem as long as it runs stable.....
OK, so it's quite some "wall of text" I produced now, but maybe somebody expirienced something similar, I'll let you definetely know, if it happens again at my next bigger card import...
Greetings
Bernhard

Yes I've seen this as well with Canon files as well as colour patterns and half black images.
I did find that if I viewed a few other images then came back to the previously corrupt looking image it previewed fine (and subsequently processed fine). This made me wonder, as they were newly imported images, if the previews weren't fully rendered and it was a case of a background process which was catching up, although this wouldn't explain why a preview sometimes appears to show parts of two images?

Yes, it's Canon files here as well. The ones, I expirienced the thing with EOS 40D Raw's, not sure about the 1D Mark III I got as well, we'll see on the next import. I browsed several folders with 1D MK3 files inside an no problems so far, but browsing folders with 40D files works also without problems. The problem seems to be related to card import, so I will propably see it in the next project I do with the 1D....
Processing and output works without any problems, quality is really very good with the new engine, I'm quite happy with that....0 -
Hi there,
tested again today with about 200 RAW files from the Canon 1D MK3 and they where imported properly from the card, all previews where rendered flawlessly...
No clue, why I had this strange previews last time .... maybe really caused by some running other process in the background of my mac..... miracles of modern technology 😉

Try with switching off OpenCL in Preferences (> Never). 0 -
Thanks Paul, I disabled Open CL now.
I was not aware of the fact that it is not supported in Mountain Lion anyway, but as stated in my other thread, funny thing is, C1 is with manually disabled Open CL much more stable and quicker as before with Auto setting.
Cheers
