Moving Folders and switching between computers

And another question. I didn't found a option yet to backup everything (settings, raws, ...) on a external drive. Is it possible at all?

As a newish user of Capture One, I have worried about this issue for some time. I realised that when I replace my main computer, it is quite possible that the drive letter may change, for instance.
I decided that, despite the advice for beginners to use a catalog ☚ī¸ , sessions are far easier to handle and they move as a complete item.
I am now going through the pain of exporting a few years worth of catalogs to sessions so that I avoid problems in the future.
In general I dislike catalog-like structures and much prefer side-car xmp processes -- but Capture One has image quality and highlight recovery that I value - so I endure its structuring methods.

I usually just have a central "Session". Then browse to the folder I want to work on (all the working C1 files are then contained within the "RAW" directory and move when backed up)

Anyone knows better feel free to step in and correct me. But I feel C1 only brought in Catalogues back in V4 because Lightroom had it?

It was after V4 iirc but I suspect it was because people were asking for it as the product broadened further and further from it roots of support for MF backs in largely studio situations.

Once you have that momentum there is a need to consider the wider potential market and of course there the better know actors had set out with a "Catalogue" based design from the start, so people thought that was "normal". However I rather doubt that was the only influence.

Ironically, in the context of this particular point, it was my dislike of the LR 'catalogue only' concept in LR V1 that kept me working with an alternative application and then taking on Capture One somewhere around V6.

Working with sessions means that I can use both applications side by side without any great complexity. (Although as C1 has progressed my need and desire to go elsewhere has waned more then somewhat.)

    😊
I worked with Bibble - which was very flexible and with an great community of plugins - it had Lab curve mapping years ago.
It also used sidecars which worked for me ( I avoided its catalogue which, again, was something of an add-on). It was possible to do almost everything in one place without using Photoshop. It became Aftershot which unfortunately did not keep up with the image quality that is possible .. hence I used C1 more and more (great highlight recovery on Olympus) and now rarely go back.

    cheers

    @Westdale
what is the fastest and easiest way to export folders from a cataloge to sessions?

    I am still learning 😊
What I do now, to create a session that can be moved between drives, is as follows - with more experience it may change.

Open the catalog and create a new session in a new window.
For each folder that I want to export from the catalog:
    - select the folder in the catalog window
    - export Images Original ( that means Raw; the Variants option just exports the generated jpegs etc)
set the output folder to the Capture folder of the new session
and the subfolder to a name that represents the original folder content
This will duplicate the raw images and any adjustments into the Session folders.
Once you are SURE you have the raw images in the session with their adjustments, delete the original folders and Catalog.

You cannot move all subfolders in one export as far as I can tell.
Nor, in a different context can you import subfolders keeping them separate.
I am told that this is because the Capture folder is a pointer not a real folder. and could be pointing outside the bounds of what you think of as the Session (and you dont want that if you want a movable session!)

I do not try to bring over the generated Jpegs as I store them in a different place.
I think, if you want to do that, you would copy manually from the Output of the catalog to the Output folder of the session
