Missing Local Adjustments brush

When making local adjustments the standard selection pointer appears instead of the brush. This happens with both the Draw Mask and Erase Mask selections, but not the Gradient Mask selection. It also only happens on my iMac but not on my MacBook Pro. Updating from 8.0.1 to 8.1 did not fix the problem, not did reloading a backup copy of the application. The Draw Mask still adds a mask to the image but there is no way to accurately draw in the mask.

Any suggestions?

  I have a similar problem since a few days. The double circle sometimes becomes visible if i try to move the brush slider back and forward. I dont understand, i am thinking to open a support case.

  Which type of mask?
  
  What are the settings for the brush, shown when you right click (for example)?

  As Grant was hinting at, this often appears to be a large brush size, resulting in a brush/eraser becoming invisible. Look for the brush/eraser settings.
