P25+ bad (corrupted?) files
Hi, just received the P25+ a week ago. I was having some trouble on a shoot yesterday (shooting tethered into MacBook pro 2Ghz, 10.4.9, 3.7.7). First camera would not connect, restarting the system seemed to correct that. Then after shooting for a while some of the previews would not render but instead turn completely black. They would show pixelated at first as usual but then no image, processing the files yields a black image. Happened several times throughout the day, maybe 20 out of 1200 shots. I've done the exact same setup about 50 times with my P25 and never encountered anything like this. Anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers

HI-
Close out Capture One program-
Try trashing the preferences : (Hard Drive/Users/User/Library/Preferences). Look for com.phaseone.application.captureone.plist and drop this in the trash and relaunch the application/library/Preferences.
If you continue experiencing problems you should call your dealer-they can troubleshoot with you and this situation can expedited much faster then using this forum venue.
Listed below are some questions they might ask:
1- Are you using the 4.5 meter firewire that came with back ?/ Are you hubbing the firewire port?
2-Are you in forced battery mode shooting tethered?
3- does it happen shooting to card?
4- try another lens?

Thanks for the reply, I'll try trashing the preferences and run some tests with different firewire cables and lenses.

Hey, I was hoping you'd had some luck narrowing the problem. I'm on a two-tech job; two different macs, two different P25+ backs - two completely independent setups.
The common elements are: both using 30ft Sinar firewire cables, using C1 Pro 3.7.7, both using P25+ backs (NOT the same one), and both running OSX 10.4.10. Question is, is there a software conflict in there somewhere, or can the P25+ (UNlike the P25) not handle a 30ft firewire? (The P25's here at the studio never had any problems with the Sinar cables).
As with Dimitrios, it hasn't been a major issue - a couple frames here and there. I'm just trying to expand my knowledge base and learn what's causing the conflict. Unfortunately, with it being so sporadic it's a bit hard to "troubleshoot" - since I haven't been able (thus far) to "force" a black frame.
Thanks!

Hey, sorry no luck with solving this issue.. I started using the 4.5 meter cable and things have improved but I still get the occasional black frame (1 per 150 shots or so). It seems to happen at random, or actually right when I'm taking the money shot for some reason. The 30' cable is much worse. There might be some question of a sychro issue with the lenses but that makes no sense to me.
As far as the cause I believe its the back, I had the P25 for about 6 months, shot over 35000 frames and never had a problem, well maybe 3 or 4 frames when I pulled out the firewire accidentally. I believe I had upgraded to 3.7.7 before taking delivery of the plus back and I didn't have the problem in between.
I was considering just living with the problem, but I'll probably take it in for repair since I'm having more problems than before with the upgrade.
Cheers!

I have the P25+ and have the same problem, that after every 100 frames or so an image will appear black and also images that were previously fine will suddenly turn black (after shooting and disconnecting the back) during the editing process. I had the P25 before and this never occurred. I use a 5 meter firewire cable and have tried using other cables and the same thing happens. I have to use the 5 meter cable, a shorter cable is not sufficient for the nature of my work. I also use the 3.7.7 version of capture one pro. I tried deleting the preferences files and still have the same result. I really need to resolve this problem, I have lost important money photos (also as someone pointed out below) because of this!!!!! 0 -
HI Jonathan-
Once you step outside the realm of the supported configuration of 4.5 meters it ends of being the roll of the dice. An occasional black capture can be a result of lack of power. What worked in the past ( like a shorter or longer cable), as people have said.... may NOT work now, a simple but true fact.
If you want to follow this through and continue to have black captures in the supported configuration, I recommend call your dealer and have them create a support case.
Follow Ulf-s recommendations- http://forum.phaseone.com/viewtopic.php?t=3195
Its important to let us know the type of computer and the specs
Report exact error if any.
Also --On some computers, black captures are caused by data transmission problem. We have located the black capture to be caused by the handling of the data transmission between the computer and back.
Let Capture One finish the work you started. Be carefull what other processes you start while shooting.
Kind regards-

My name is Brian Eaves and I'm a digital tech in Chicago.
In the past month I have experienced this problem with both the P25+ and recently a P30+ back. The files come in , they appear nornal for a brief second and then turn black. Kind of embarrasing when the client is looking over my shoulder while shooting.
It doen't matter if the client shoots small or large file format. The consistant thing is when shooting teathered. I'm usung the current ver of C1 Pro. One day on a whim I dragged the file on my PS CS3 icon on the dock, the file opened up in Carmera Raw 4.1. I had to make a few adustments with ACR to get it to look like C1 Pro (added at least 3/4 stop in expoure and brought the black point up).
You have to play with the setting and white balance but you can potentially save the files for good output. I managed to save over 80 files out 1000 roughly. I told the client I was able to recover the shot and several of them were GOOD PICKS. Try using the current ACR plugin for Black frames, it may suprise you. 😄
This maybe a workround until the buffer issue is resoved.

If you search the forum, you will see this has been an ongoing problem with Plus backs and 3.7.7... We are anxiously awaiting a 3.7.8 release to fix the black frame and RLD freezes.. 0 -

First of all, thanks for your input. However distinction has to be made with each photographers situation.
Power issues can cause black captures, like someone using a 30ft firewire cable , as well as corrupt captures and yes there is a data transmission/computer issue as well.
As a Supporter I wish there was one fix, but in a black capture situation that is not so. so the recommendations and the trouble shoot are very important!
Kind regards-
