xmp files created on import into catalog

Hi,

I'm a new user to C1 recently converted from Lightroom. I notice that when jpg images are imported into C1 an .xmp file is created alongside the jpegs. This is not behaviour I have seen with Lightroom. Is there anyway to prevent C1 from creating these .xmp files alongside jpegs on import?
