Capture One 8.X is great but some key feature requests
Hi folks at the Capture One Team,
Just downloaded the upgrade to Capture One 8 the other day and spent the evening working with it. Overall, the speed, responsiveness and the new features are great. I'm impressed with the quality of image upon inport.
However there are three key feature requests I have that I think would really improve the Capture One 8 user experience.
1) Please add a "Select by Rating" and "Select by Color" ratings commands to the default menu structure under the Edit menu, along with the other Select functions. Right now, you have to open another (Advanced Selection) menu to get to these commands, and then check the boxes you've created; it's a hassle and too modal.
2) Please, please, please add support for 3rd party plug-ins, e.g. NIK and Topaz Fusion Effects. For example, everyone I know uses NIK Silver Efex to do black and white conversions, it's just a much more fluid and effective way to do black and white conversions than using the color channel sliders.
3) Vibrance tool. Clarity and Structure are great, but adding Vibrance would be a big plus.
Thanks for listening and hopefully implementing these requests. I enjoy using Capture One and love the quality of the results, and rev 8 looks to be better than ever, but from a "kaizen" perspective, there is always room for improvement.

It has been suggested a few times that the Saturation tool in Capture One acts rather like the Vibrance tool in Lightroom. It is more subtle than the Lightroom Saturation tool. One of the reasons for that is that as you increase saturation, it does it "intelligently" by having more effect on colours in the image that are not very saturated, but not so much effect effect on colours that are already quite saturated.

1) Select By Rating is possible via keyboard shortcut. Check out the Filter option at the bottom of the Edit Keyboard Shortcuts. It's incredibly powerful when used correctly.
2) By combining different tools in C1 with the Styles Tool you can do roll-over previews of a myriad of adjustments. Along with it's class-leading film grain tool this is as good as it gets. Moreover you don't have to leave RAW to accomplish them.
3) The saturation slider in C1 is vibrance in the positive direction. To do pure-saturation use the Color Editor Global Saturation slider. For boosts to saturation within only a certain range of user-defined hues feel free to create Color Editor presets or styles.
We cover all three of these (and about 8 hours more worth of stuff) in our Capture One Masters Program:0 -
Doug pretty much said it all.
1. Already present.
2. If 3rd Party companies want to build support, they are welcome to it.
3. Can you elaborate on what you believe is lacking in the already existing options? How do the saturation options not meet your desired operation?0 -

Your response to #2 is woefully inadequate . What the user was asking for is for C1 (not the plugin) to behave in a certain way. It's not on the plug "to build support".... the plugins' work fine and they work with Aperture, LR or straight from the file browser with an "open with". I believe C1 just needs a small tweak to allow processed CATALOG images to auto-save to the image folder. That can't be done now.
What the OP was asking for is similar integration as your competition. And the thing is, you are very close.

You mean Capture One should have Plugin capabilities?
It already does, has had for years. So far only ProPhoto has taken advantage of this to build a tool for Light Controls directly within Capture One. They worked with our developers, built a tool with a little help from us and VOILA, a plugin in Capture One is born.
So again, as Plugin Architecture for Capture One already exists... If 3rd Party companies want to build support, they are welcome to it.
A request for plugins from NIK and Topaz Fusion Effects is therefore, best asked of those developers. If they wish to have integration in Capture One, the door is always open.0 -
I just wrote a E-Mail to Niksoftware and asking for plugins. Maybe more should do the same, to see a positive result. 0 -

You're not getting it. The plugins work fine... they work identically with Aperture and LR. Theses plugins do something very simple: they open a file (the filename passed as a parameter), allow editing, and save in the SAME location. That's it, so there's nothing for them to do differently.
C1 is trying to compete with LR and offer an option for Aperture, right? All I'm asking for, to have C1 work like it's competitors, is to allow for the Process "Store files" Output destination to be set to "image location" . Again, I'm using referenced files. Make me a TIFF in the same spot I'm in now and don't ask me for a location.
Background: I'm using a large catalog of 50k files; Raw files are in a referenced location. I will use Nik SilverEfex Pro as my external editor for B&W conversions in this example; I've worked out a decent process for exporting a TIFF to SilverEfex Pro, then bringing it back into the SAME folder structure in my C1P8 catalog. Much like Aperture and LR. I'm close to what I want (and what your competitors do) but not 100% there.
The process:
Make sure the referenced folders are set to Synchronize.
1) I created a "process" called "Silver Efex Pro" which is set to open a 16bit TIFF in that external editor. Select that process.
2) change the Output Location "Store Files" field to the same directory the RAW is in. <---- note this step!
3) run the Silver Efex Pro Process and Silver NX2 opens, I tweak the B&W conversion in Silver Efex and "Save"
4) Silver Efex Pro closes and I'm back to C1P8
5) the image is still not visible in my Catalog because I have not Sync'd the folder yet. I simply right-click on the folder and "synchronize" and the new B&W tiff version appears in the catalog and all is good.
My only suggestions or requests here is that I don't want to have to select the "store files" folder in step 2 and I'd like the Synchronization to happen automatically. I want the option to store the resulting TIFF in the same folder as the raw it was spawned from , without having to select that folder.
So to repeat: Would it be possible to add another option in the "store files" drop down to "store in same folder"? And perhaps auto-sync that folder at the end of the Process.
If C1 did those two things, then all the plugins out there would work exactly like they do in LR and AP. You'd have some happier Aperture converts and divert many of them from LR (which handles these plugins cleanly). You could advertize that C1 works with all your Aperture and LR Plugins!0 -
As suggested in a previous post, I have also e-mailed Nik a request for Capture One compatibility. Suggest more do the same. 0 -
I add few other key features I would like to see introduced to CO as soon as possible:
1. ability to view PSD files in the viewer, just to see they are present or to quickly open in PS with a double click. With catalog features now in CO it's quite common to use it to browse the folders and files and PSD must be a viewable file.
2. the sync feature for the catalog should be able to add/remove also folders and sub-folders and not only the photo inside them. Now if I add a folder structure I need, before to sync, to manually add the folders to the catalog... overcomplicated for nothing (as it happens in LR)
3. to have the possibility to move folders in the hard disk structure from the catalogue (as it happens in LR)
Thanks!

Answer from NIK: NIK-Software is not compatible (either Pro 8 nor NX2; I wasn't asking about NX2 🙄 ). Their answer was, I should ask Nikon. 🙄 The next time I should write in english. 0 -
I think what Stephen is asking for is something very simple. For example, convert a Raw to TIF and then automatically pass the file on to say Lightroom or any other relevant application of choice. Nearly all other Raw processing software I use does this, including free software like Raw Photo Processor (RPP). As far as I know you can't do this in C1. [quote="Drew" wrote:

Contacted Nik and they seemed a bit confused (as noted by a previous poster) about Nikon NX and Capture One, although I did write in English. I followed up and this was their reply:
"Unfortunately we also do not support PhaseOne's Capture One Pro 8 software for use with the Nik Collection software as it is incompatible. However, I have submitted a 'Wish list' ticket to our engineering team for consideration of the host application for future versions of the Nik Collection."
Cheers all!
Perhaps everyone should contact Nik...you never know.0 -

This needs to be better communicated and made available to users who want to try this functionality. Obviously it needs the user to have programming skills (I expect).
Where can we get more information about this?
Drew, can you provide a url ?

From the example you've given, it looks like the only thing you can't do is AutoSync the file. Sure it's not as fluid as you would like, but its all still there...
For example, Process and Open with Color Efex Pro;
http://i60.tinypic.com/2e1t53l.png
And process to the image folder so the resulting file is right next to your RAW...
http://i62.tinypic.com/30j62bo.png
So, you process the image to the Image Folder. It opens in whatever you'd like them to. You edit, save and exit. Then the only thing to do is sync the file and/or rebuild the preview.
I understand that the main difference here is that processing of the file is required, but as the nature of Capture One is a RAW conversion software, this is a current limitation. Perhaps the ability to "Open With" directly in the software, without processing, is something we can work towards in the future and we would be grateful for this feature to be expressed in a Support Case.
The workflow you're requiring seems to work, but the "Plugin" aspect of it is certainly something that the software manufactures would need to contact us to implement. And once again, the door is open.0 -

I think if I remember correctly from before that the SDK for Capture Pro is a chargeable item which actually puts off potential developers as until you get the product and documentation it is difficult to assess if it is worthwhile to develop and spend time with these add-ons. Other RAW software manufacturers provide this for free so it encourages plug-in development.
If this has changed then I am interested.
Please can you confirm/deny.0 -

The SDK is a chargeable software for industrial applications.
However, I never said that the SDK was the only option, so again I'd suggest you contact us and see where it goes... 😉0 -
Thanks Drew.
I have contacted David Grover so hopefully he can help.0 -
Drew, I'd be interested in plugin panel development info as well. I've been using a collection of hacked-together scripts for doing exposure fusion and other multi-image-stack work, and a proper plugin could well be the way to go. 0 -
How about being able to export different output recipes to different directories. Or is that a "chargeable" item?
"Along with it's class-leading film grain tool this is as good as it gets."
Sorry, Nik Silver FX 2 smokes C1's painting by channels method. It would be great to have the Silver FX features fully implemented.0 -

Can't you do that already, using the File tab under Process Recipe?

Hi folks of PhaseOne,
don't try to be the better Lightroom, there's no need for that, just keep on with C1 as a phantastic converter ...0 -

You are now just one very simple step away, we just need the derivative file to be registered in the catalog at creation time 😄0 -

Doug,
If Select By Rating is possible by via keyboard shortcut, please describe how. I went into the Edit Keyboard shortcuts, and assigned a key for Star Ratings and Color Tags. I just figured out that using the Filter Tool in the Folder tool tab lets you select images in the browser that have a specific star or color rating, but I was not able to figure out how to Select By Rating via a keyboard shortcut from the response that you provided (I just happened on the Folder Tool Tab/Filter tool solution by chance).
Furthermore, my request wasn't around keyboard shortcuts, etc. It was to implement a Select by Rating and Select by Color menu command under the Edit menu. This should be simple to do and will be very useful. It should also be available for selection when right-clicking when in the browser via a pop-up menu list.0 -

Thanks, Ian, that reply was actually helpful. If the Saturation tool functions like Vibrance in LR, then it should labeled Vibrance, just as Clarity is labeled in a way everyone understands.0 -

I completely agree with all your points above, they are struggling to get it, even though you articulated those points very clearly, thank you. These things work the way you describe in Lightroom, and they should work in the same manner in C1 as well.0 -
